Hi I’m 3 weeks into my recovery of my di flap reconstruction after finding out I had a dcis in my milk ducts. I found out yesterday I have to have chemotherapy in a few weeks and I really don’t know what to expect. Any advice would be appreciated please I’m so worried x

  • Hi Millie24

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with dcis and that you have to have chemo.

Chemo isn't nearly as bad as it's painted out to be.  Treatments have come on a long way in the last few years.  I suggest that you only rely on sites like this one for your information as often the information on google is way out of date.

While I won't say chemo is easy it is doable.  Your medical team will give you a load of meds to help counteract any possible side effects and if they don't work you can contact your oncology ward for advice and they will either suggest an alternative med or just reduce the strength of your medication or your chemo dose. You will also be give an out of hours telephone number to ring if you are feeling unwell.

When you go for chemo particularly for the first time make sure that you bring something with you to keep yourself occupied while you are having chemo as it can take a while. Also bring something to drink and some snacks in case you feel hungry and thirsty though you may get something to drink and eat there. The first time will be the longest as they explain about the treatment they are giving you.  You will  be given meds to take before chemo so that you don't have any side effects.  You will also get meds to take home with you to help with any side effects you may have.

There is a chemo thread on this forum in which those of us who have either been or are going through chemo give help and advice to anyone going through chemo.  The link is as follows: community.macmillan.org.uk/.../december-2021---march-2022-breast-cancer-chemo

Wishing you the best of luck with your chemo when it starts.

    Best wishes
