Hello everyone.

I'm  5 weeks post left breast mastectomy. Received a letter to start my chemotherapy next week. Unfortunately the hospital I'm going to no longer do the pre assessment appointments. This has made my anxiety a bit difficult for me as I have a fear of hospitals. So far the breast clinical staff have all gone above and beyond in helping me through this.  Oncology department appear to deal with things differently. Not sure what to expect about getting picc line expect what I've googled and  what my first chemotherapy session may be like. Dreading both to be honest. Any one else can please share your experiences of these please. My doctor had suggested diazepan to use to calm me down. Any one else used this for piccline insertion?

Got piccline on Wednesday afternoon and chemotherapy starting Thursday morning so stressing out a bit now.

Thank you in advance.

  • Hello Fi1,  I had my piccline inserted in December,  finished my 4th session of chemo, I must say I didn't know what to think either about the piccline but I wasn't anxious like you are about hospitals,  the piccline itself was grand I didnt feel a thing..a couple of hours after my arm started to feel heavy,  took a couple of weeks for that to settle down. Now I don't feel it in my arm. District nurse calls every Tuesday to change dressing and clean the line out with a saline flush, you don't feel anything.  They also take my bloods through it the week I have chemo.. when I go for chemo the nurses check piccline and flush it again before they start treatment, honestly it's really good as the nurse don't have to prod at you to find veins and put a cannula In each time you go for chemo. Good luck, I hope this was helpful xx

  • Hi Deeds. Thank you very much for replying. You have helped put my mind to rest a bit. Is the picc line done in  operation room or on a ward?

I'm relieved it doesn't sound as bad as I am worrying about.

  • Hi. Having the PICC line inserted  is nothing much you don't feel.it.  I've had one in for 4months and don't notice it. Just have to keep it dry by wearing a plastic sleeve in the bath.

Actually having the chemo is nothing much either. I have cold caps which has been very successful in keeping my hair but prolongs the session and is uncomfortable but doable.

Obviously there are side effects after the chemo which seem to vary to some extent person to person. They give you anti sickness meds which help and you need to be able to rest more.

    Good luck xxx

  • Fe1 sorry I haven't got back to you , I suppose by now you have piccline in. How did it go for you. And how are you feeling after chemo xx
