I am 8 weeks after mastectomy and wondered when to make appointment to be measured for prosthesis bra. Decided did not want reconstruction.
Hi Sully, I noticed your post hasn't had any replies yet, as the site is quite busy. I only had a lumpectomy so can't advise you myself but I am sure so someone with the right experience will be along soon. Hope your recovery is going well.
thank you for replying I have had lots of questions but find the answers normally on the site but this one nothing
Hi sully,
I had double mastectomy, no reconstruction end of September then auxiliary clearance December. I found I was too uncomfortable to wear anything but a soft pullover bra ( looks a bit like a sports bra style) I just put my softies in the pockets behind the foam shape they slot in them. And find them really comfortable. But like you have been wondering about when to go for measurement and prosthesis fitting for a proper bra.
i have decided to wait till I’ve finished chemo and radiotherapy before I make an appointment but I suppose if you have healed well and not suffering discomfort then I can’t see a problem making an appointment. You could always ask your breast care nurse for her advice regarding this .
thank you so much for replying. I will take your advice. I am still uncomfortable with my ribs hurting under the scar line and tissue damage running towards under arm. I have cording underarm which I am working on with physio and exercises. On the whole progressing well but night time just cant get comfortable. I am 8 weeks after right side mastectomy and being righthanded learning to strengthen leftside. I wonder how you are having had a double mastectomy.
The double mastectomy went well and I found it less painful than the auxiliary clearance.
had cancer in left breast, the right I requested Removal to reduce risk as I always suffered with cysts and my surgeon agreed.
I hav some tightness in the left side and through to armpit but improving over time.
Hi Sully,
hope you are making good recovery. My breast care nurse actually supplied me with a prosthesis and recommended a supplier once I knew the size. I have used Nicola Jane, an online firm with outlet in Chichester, since my mastectomy in 2005. Once the scar healed it has not been a problem!
It’s really not as bad as we imagine , I didn’t have pain just slight discomfort. My surgeon didn’t use drains but only small amount of fluid that dispersed naturally over about 3/4 weeks.
I don’t know if you are having reconstruction but would imagine it’s slightly more uncomfortable than mastectomy alone .
Thank you so much for your reply, apparently I'm not having reconstruction straight away as they say I will need radiotherapy. I'm not sure how long it all takes and how long after I can have reconstruction.i know this is totally irrelevant but I'm getting married march 10th next year, my darling man doesn't care if I have breasts or not as long as I'm OK. But I'm worried I won't feel like me. I was only diagnosed end of January and it's all so overwhelming
