Hi everyone. I had my baby 7 weeks ago and was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks after he was born. I was referred for a lump which was thought to be a blocked milk duct - it turned out to be a cyst but by chance on the ultrasound they detected a small area which turns out is a small cancer.

I am having a lumpectomy at the end of April and then they said probably radiotherapy. They hope it is isolated and early stage but cannot get much from the other tests like MRI at this stage due to breast tissue being so dense due to pregnancy/baby.

I want to feel lucky that it was discovered and I know it could be worse but i feel resentful about it happening especially when ive just had baby and am trying to deal with/enjoy that. Im also anxious about not being able to look after my son after the operation and radiotherapy and side effects. Also been told I'll need medication for 10 years.

Is there anyone with similar experience or advice? X

  • Hi La

i recently had a lumpectomy and was out of hospital same day and my children didn’t even notice. If they don’t take more than a couple of lymph nodes then you should be fine for picking up your baby etc

I’ve not gad radiation yet as have to have chemo first, but my aunt had 15 rounds of it and also takes the hormone blockers. Said that apart from the early starts to drive to Manchester, she had no real side effects at all abs was usually only 40 mins at the appointment. I think the hormone blockers effect everyone differently so would cross that bridge when it comes To it and maybe not read into side effects too much as then you can kind of psychologically wait for them when they may not happen if that makes sense.

    best of luck xx
