I have breast cancer for the second time first time I had it was 2020 had lumpectomy nothing in surrounding tissue asked for an oncotype test done and was recommended chemo and radium I then then had Chemo took really not well after 4th session so I quit it and never took the radium as the thought of getting side effects put me of.. now I have it back not far from the last bit I was diagnosed in Dec 2022 I am due in for another lumpectomy on Tuesday 15.2.22 and they want me to have radium afterwards to which I am scared again of the side effects. Also had couple of lymph nodes removed first time and now want to remove some this time also.. head was in a mess but I am feeling stronger like I did the first time but there is always doubt in your mind..
Hi, sorry to hear of your diagnosis, I had radiotherapy last October snd i found there were very few side effects to this, it was significantly easier than chemo. Wishing you strength to get through your treatment.
Hi Coolmum
I am sorry to hear of your recurrence. We are all sacred and apprehensive on this journey, understandably no one wants to put their bodies through this if it can be helped but the reality is that we cannot avoid it. A lot of money, time and research has gone into getting treatment approved and be used for patients and so its not a baseless recommendation when onco does say we need this and that. However I also understand taking the treatment is a choice and we all live the decisions we make - so very tough indeed.
I do hope this time with the support u have from your medical team, own research and also online community here that you will be able to get through what you need to combat bc.
Were your lymph nodes positive from the first time? Did u ask why the second time they are recommending more lymph nodes removal? Sorry for the many questions...I find that with my medical team if I don't ask questions they say nothing, for fear of being held accountable for what they say!
It all depends on your diagnosis as to what needs targeting to eliminate it coming back. The focus is to blast this out of your system so that I won't come back ever!
Keep going, dig deep...as we all have to do to get our health back on track. Take care. Once u know next steps we can offer more support too.
Cx
Hi Claud272
Thank you for your reply. i understand there is a lot of research, money and time all gone into to research this but I haven’t had the best medical team behind me at all on the last occasion I have basically had to go through it all myself (except for my husband, family and friends) every time I phoned the cancer care nurses that are supposed to be there to discuss help answer questions etc with I always got the answer machine would leave message and it would take a few days before they would get back to me.. by time they would get back to me it was always to late..
I am delighted that you had a good medical team to help you through.. I also did look online which is very helpful but I looked on here also but never signed up as I felt a lot stronger then than I do now as I had the bit between my teeth as they say.. but a few things have knocked me back this time an definitely don’t feel the strength as before.. but I have to as to get through this..
no they were not infected he just removed a couple to test and for precautionary reasons the same as he said he is doing this time around.. I also feel a lot better about maybe taking the radium treatment after reading others replies to me. Thank you for your help
Hi I am also new on here although am on Immunotherapy for Malignant Melanoma. My beautiful Daughter died from Breast Cancer because her Doctor refused to put her forward for a Mammogram even though 3 others in family have had Breast Cancer, because of this I have refused surgery so they have put me on Anastrozole but they make me feel so ill. Maybe I should give them a bit more time as I only started them a week ago. Hope you keep positive and have some good results.
Hi I am so sorry for your loss that is absolutely terrible her Doc did not give her a mammogram.. i can understand why you don’t want treatment I felt the same and but mine was all so quick I never had a chance to think or find out any information except from online and friend you has been through breast cancer herself..I hope you start to feel better with your treatment.. I am still wondering and thinking about radium.. I have until Mon when I go into hospital for a lymph node scan, then in on Tue morning fro another lumpectomy.. stay strong also take care.
Hi Irishgirl16.
Thank you so much for your reply. Yes Chemo is very very harsh on your body I had it in 2020 an I still feel like I am recovering from it still.. take care and thank you again.
