Today I went for my appointment. Had an examination by the consultant. Mammogram, ultrasound and then 8 core biopsy's. 4 on the breast lump,  and then the doctor decided to do 4 on the various lymph nodes under my arm, while telling me they don't usually do the lymph node biopsy's at this appointment. Feeling battered and bruised. That clicking is horrendous. Then had to go back to see the consultant who told me to stay healthy in preparation for surgery.  Although he did not say I had cancer. ?! Left feeling confused. Is it normal to have so many samples taken at once? I now have a 2 week wait for the results. Seems like such a long time.

  • Yes it's normal- I had 12 taken from 2 areas on my breast.  One area benign and one DCIS,  I'm 6 years  clear now xx

  • Hi thanks for replying. What does DCIS mean? This is all new to me. I was expecting to be sent straight home after he felt the lump. I really wasn't expecting any tests so it's been a bit of a rush and a shock. I am pleased to hear you're doing well.

  • It's a type of early , non. Invasive cancer.  No lumps usually and removed via surgery with radiotherapy afterwards.  No chemo required for it.

  • Thanks for explaining.

    1. this was me in November. I had 4 samples - 3 lumps in my breast and 1 in my lymph node. Weirdly nothing was indicated to me at the appt although I should have been told they were suspicious but I could see from shape of the lumps on the ultrasound images that the only result would be cancer and that was confirmed to me on 8 December that 2 out of the 3 lumps were grade 3 invasive ductal carcinomas as the was the 1 lymph node.  Thankfully I had stuff going on with the kids in the run up to Christmas to distract me but the waiting is the worse bit.

  • Hi thanks for replying. I couldn't see the screen from the way I was led, but she did say it wasn't usual to do lymph nodes at the same time, so I assume from that she saw something she wasn't happy with. Although the consultant didn't confirm anything, when he mentioned preparing for surgery I went a bit blank. I really wasn't told anything. How are you doing now?

  • hi I had biopsies on lump right round side of breast ...nearly got missed...and armpit. I'm glad they did it there after the recall mammogram . soonest started soonest dealt with. I had the results a few weeks later, yes grade 2...stage3a as it had spread to lodes...please don't panic loads of women go through this. I have had the op, 5 of 11 lodes positive so all removed. now just chemo to mop up stray cells. xxx

Maybe that is their subtle way of semi preparing you? I remember after my biopsies the doctor told me to go home and have a drink! I think it's difficult because they see stuff on the screen but obviously don't want to confirm until they know for definite. One of my lumps looked suspicious but biopsy showed it was benign and the MRI showed it was a fibroadenoma.

I will say I started taking multivitamins once it was confirmed as I wanted to be as healthy as I could and make sure my iron levels etc were good.

I'm doing well despite everything, it's become a bizarre form of normal. Because I had several lumps, I had MRI before the type of surgery was decided and from the results of that I needed a single mastectomy and removal of all lymph nodes. Recovery is good and I've just had the results. It's stage 2 with only 1 lymph node involved which I'm relieved at but the shocker was that there was actually 7 tumours in my breast! Eekkkk

    Hang in there xx

  • I had 3 samples taken from a swollen lymph node, 3 from the lump, and 5 from what turned out to be a small benign lump.  I left in no doubt I had a malignant tumor but that's because it's 43mm x 38mm and the Consultant Radiographer and the surgeon have seen more lumps than I've had hot dinners so I prepared myself for that outcome.   Mine is Grade 3 but stage 2.  I'm seeing the Oncologist tomorrow.

Hi, currently waiting here too, i get my results on the 14th Feb. I had the core biopsy  and 6 taken from the one area, i saw the mammogram on the screen but i couldnt feel a lump so im hoping its going to be good news.  Trying to keep busy whilst waiting but have the odd relapse where it kinda consumes you.

hope it all goes ok for you x
