I would like help in what foods to eat and what to avoid during chemo please

  • Hello Vinster. Do you know what chemo you will be having yet? I've recently finished 6 months chemo which consisted of 4 cycles of AC and 4 of Docetaxel and sometimes I didn't feel very hungry but at other times I craved chocolate and Haribo jelliies.  I also got a strange taste in my mouth for a few days after each chemo session but generally I ate what I wanted, when I felt like it, as you need to keep your strength up during the treatment. I had a lot of soup, fruit and yoghurt and also simple meals like scrambled egg, cheese/beans on toast and pasta with salad. Going by the various posts here chemo tends to effect people differently but you might find that your appetite and taste change so go with what suits you. You need to make sure that you drink a lot of water and I found that adding squash helped me to drink more, and I also got a taste for ginger beer and smoothies. I'm sure others will be along soon with some more tips and good luck with your treatment, hope it goes well.

  • Lalalou , I'm the same simple small meals egg beans toast crackers soup smoothies yogurts craving for simple salad with beetroot and sweets like stardust and boiled fruit..I do struggle with drinking a lot of water but I try my best as you can become constipated..xx

  • Just tucking into ice cream here

wwll annoyed , they gave me wrong pill times to counteract my bad reaction to chemo tRage

20 steroid pills to start at midnight , not this morning !  Doh ! Already loaded up Arrow up️

im more or less eating what I feel like , went off meat for a while as couldn’t taste it ??

im eating at strange times too , have brekkie around 9:to 10 am -, lunch 2!or 3 , dinner usually around 7 or 8 pm when I fancy something

yesterday I made a veggie soup in my slow cooker and ate it all day ??

got a strange urge for fresh pineapple, munching thru a whole one in the last few days, don’t know where that urge came from ?

im definitely not pregnant at my age ! Lol - they said stick to a pregnancy diet ? When I was pregnant with my son, had a curry a day! And I was dying for an Indonesian meal, so had to cook it from scratch! Joy

oh well D day again tomorrow, , or C day !

  • I hope you don't mind me following this post as I'm about to start chemo next week.

    All the best, everyone Hugging

When you're going through hell, don't stop!

  • We’re all different but the good for me! Lemon and sweet citrus flavoured things, yogurts, sorbets, porridge, scrambled eggs, things with limited texture Thinking pears, cheese.

the bad: chocolate SobSobSob bread, apples or sharp flavours, anything very sweet like jam, garlic Nauseated faceanything that required a lot of chewing and swallowing, I got a permanent lump in my thoat.

EC was better for me, only a few horrid tasting days per cycle, Docetaxel was disgusting throughout! The good news is it goes away when you finish xx

  • I’m the opposite with chemo , never off the toilet , they give us loperamide on prescriptions for the diarrhoea.

why I’m eating lots of veg, seem worse with meat??everyone is different . I do have a few strange cravings , such as pineapple , think I’ve OD on that now .

I had really bad heartburn , ( from no idea ??) as soon as I got a prescription from my doctor it went ??
also painful thrush - another typical side effect , they’re liveable with tbh , just discomfort , and annoying if I go out thinking ahead of a toilet situation.

on a plus side I think I had sciatica before I had chemo , very painful sitting in my car ( drive a lot for my job) can’t do the job now - too much driving , but that seems to have gone , maybe it would have done anyway

maybe tiredness/ lethargy , but I love my bed , so not a problem .

depends what chemo too , I have  the phesgo combination with docetaxel, ( because  I’m her2 positive ) which I have  to take a lot of steroids with so I don’t have a reaction, but hey it it works- brilliant !! Will reduce surgeryFingers crossedto a lumpectomy Fingers crossed Pray

    good luck Fingers crossed

  • Oh god 20 steroids! Hope your ok.

I had 2nd dose of EC last Thursday,  I'm finding it's taking me longer to come around this time,  more tired backache and sore wrist and that horrible nauseous feeling in stomach, ended up with diarrhoea yesterday, was thinking it was because i had a small ham salad wholemeal roll, my daughter made me some potato and leek soup for today, and I love my crackers and butter for wee snacks. Xx

  • No not at all, let us know how you get on. Your taste buds do change  I love pasta ,but can't eat it now as it just doesn't taste or feel right in my mouth. Lol xx
