Having a mastectomy soon petrified

  • Hello JR1609LMR welcome. It's natural to feel scared about surgery, I was before I had a lumpectomy, but there's a lot of people here who have had a mastectomy and hopefully will be able to put your mind at rest. When are you having the operation? x

  • Hi There

I can understand your feeling but I had a mastectomy five weeks ago and honestly it has been pretty painless, not so bad as I expected.

Try and stay in overnight if its offered , I was discharged the same day and district nurses didn't visit for two days.Luckily everything has healed well xx

  • Hi JR

Sorry you have had to face mastectomy. I had this on 9 Nov

It's not a nice feeling, and no one wants surgery. It was my first of everything, scans, operation  etc so I felt all sorts of emotions, even wrote my child letters should anything happen to me!! Talk to your BCN to give comfort. I hope you got a nice surgeon. They make you feel assured and give you confidence. Remember they do these type of op as a routine...while in our world this is huge thing...in theirs it's their everyday Job! That is how I gave myself the confidence that my surgeon is really good and I trust her and the anaesthetist with my life so you got to believe.

What did I do to prepare? Well, fitness, nutrition and paying real attention  to ME! I had not before as I was a busy working single mum. Getting my hospital bag ready, buying bra /bio oil, healthy eating, regular exercise to keep as supple before and only thing was sleeping, it was hard. On the night before of course naturally only 2 hours sleep so was exhausted the next day for op. But I tried to keep as calm as possible as I believe it will help with my healing. You will be given stuff to read too. If u need advice Macmillan helpline is fab.

Hopefully you will be OK...try not to worry as worry doesn't help one bit. Use your "worry" energy to get ready in body and mind.

    Good luck

    C x
