Breast implant is a peculiar shape

Hi everyone stage 2 lobular cancer and operated last Wednesday the 1st .some lymph nodes removed too but must wait two weeks for the result

  • Had an implant put in at the same time but it looks as through it has risen up my chest wall I  have what looks like half a very large breast .  I appreciate that surgery particularly cosmetic takes a long while to settle .  I saw my surgeon yesterday and she said that she had never seen this happen before .To be honest I'm thinking that this might be because I train with weights and therefore have tighter and larger than average chest muscles, perhaps the implant would have been better placed over the muscle ?

I know this is usual practice with cosmetic surgeons but i never had the chance to tell her (the surgeon) because shes a very poor listener and dismisses my questions such as

how many lymph nodes did you remove " I cant remember "

How long might the surgery take " as long as it takes. "  I haven't felt heard and would have preferred a different surgeon, unfortunately the others had longer lists which would have necessitated a longer wait . In retrospect I wish I had waited

Old school surgeon with a don't question me attitude . At least I can have my treatment in a hospital nearer to me .

  • Hi

What an appalling attitude from your consultant. You can ask your breast cancer nurses questions cregarding your surgery. Hopefully your consultant was just having a bad day...

I asked my breast cancer nurse  a couple of questions, including the number of sentinel nodes removed and she found out and got back straight away. She was also great at answering my questions regarding surgery.

I delayed my surgery by a 4 weeks so I could stay with the surgeon who diagnosed my cancer as she inspired me with so much confidence although she offered to pass my case onto a colleague if I wanted an earlier date for surgery. I had my op last Wednesday and I'm so glad I waited.

Delays need to be weighed up with regard to risk, all I would say is dont be afraid to explore your options .

    I hope all goes well.

  • Malposition of implant is a greater risk if you have well developed chest muscles- I was told that. I’d be sceptical that they’ve never seen something like this - it’s actually a known complication. Given that most of my knowledge is from watching Botched, I can’t be sure but I have suspicions he didn’t make the breast pocket large enough. But it may settle just with gravity. Or you could have capsular contracture (scarring) but I believe that’s unlikely early on. Whatever, you can always get a second opinion from a different plastic surgeon- that is your right under the NHS, and problems with implants are almost always correctable. But your current surgeon sounds awful!

  • Thank you for your reply and best wishes for a speedy recovery. I'm thinking of changing my surgeon to someone with better communication skills

I have told her that I dont feel listened to but today I had a reply within hours of emailing photos of my breast to her , so that's an improvement.   It was suggested that the implant may be too small which i'm.not really buying as I was only a 34a prior to surgery I mean do implants even come smaller than that ? Smile Still I'm recovering well day 13 today,  driving from day 7 just so damm tired !  Never experienced tiredness like it . Hoping to return to part time work next week . It's looking unlikely.

  • Thank you for the reply and no I wasn't convinced that she hadn't seen it before either . It's been excruciatingly uncomfortable pressing against my chest wall i did consider capsular contracture as you say , but it's been this way since day one.  Fortunately  it's much better today  . Theres no doubt it will have to be replaced maybe at the same time they put in the other implant . I'm seriously thinking about changing to another consultant,  but I'm worried that i might get the reputation of being difficult.  Next stop radiotherapy which luckily I can have at a hospital closer to home .its great talking with you guys I you've reassured me that I'm Not being over sensitive.

  • If you asked for a second opinion just about the reconstruction in a few months you could find out if it’s just a temporary problem or if the original op had been done badly. Plastic surgeons tend to be critical of one another’s work!

  • Good point I might well do that .
