Breast lump

Hello.

I have found a lump in the upper left side of my left breast. I felt it in the shower when examining my breasts, when my arm was in the air. If I’ve got a bra on or my breast is supported, I cannot feel the lump.
I’ve got an appt on 13th at the breast clinic.
I’m 47.
I know no one can diagnose one way or the other on here, I’m just a bit worried.

  • Understandable to be worried but even if it is cancer, the vast majority of people with breast cancer will be all right - you’ve got this. Your doctor should refer you to a hospital breast unit where you should be seen within 2 weeks. They will do a mammogram, ultrasound scans and may take biopsies (local anaesthetic, so it shouldn’t hurt)… try to take one step at a time and stay off the Google! Well done for coming here rather than doing that. Let us know how you do

Hi, I found myself in the similar situation 7-8 weeks ago and had a 2 week referral. Seen just after 2 weeks and had mammogram, US scan and biopsy done at the same time. Later informed it’s stage 2 triple negative. Now going to see the Chemo nurses to kick start treatment soon. It is scary and hope this is not an outcome of your investigations.
    All the best…stay positive.

  • Thank you for the replies. I booked an appt online for 13th but letter has arrived saying it’s the 20th December. I’ve left a message for them to get back to me. It’s supposed to be within 2 weeks. My gp did an urgent referral so I’ve left a message with the breast clinic to call me and confirm when my appt actually is.
13th would be better the I don’t have to tell any of my family and have them worry.

  • It’s supposed to be two weeks, but with Covid some clinics are rammed, with staff off or poached by other departments so I hope they can fit you in earlier. Waiting is the worst part

  • Hi Goth1

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have found a lump.  Most lumps turn out to be benign but if it does turn out to be breast cancer it is very treatable.

Like you I discovered a lump in the shower last year and while mine turned out to be cancer, I caught it early and after having chemo, surgery and radiotherapy I am now cancer free.

Wishing you the best of luck with your appointment and hopefully it won't turn out to be serious.

    Best wishes

  • Hi...try not to worry till your appointment, easier said than done.

I also discovered mine during self check in shower end Sep and diagnosed with BC on 1 Oct. All sort of emotions you will feel, and waiting is the worse...I know how u feel.

Just take a step at a time ok? Ladies here are all pretty good to provide comfort. Make sure you push for appointment and say you're really worried its BC. Spell it out and ask for Ultra sound/biopsy. Don't take no for an answer.

  • Hi, I called and told them I’d travel, just get me in quickly, but it was before Covid, so easier. Just beg, cry, plead. If you can, offer to go in really early or late or to another hosp. I was seen at end of day after clinic had seen everyone but it got me in! Good luck. X

  • Breast clinic called me back. Appt is 20th. She said call every other day in case there’s a cancellation. Basically they’re snowed under.
Thanks for all your replies, best wishes to you all x

  • Hi . I am slightly further down the road than you, having just had a biopsy and now waiting on results. It is a really worrying time and the waiting is awful, but at least you are already on the right track.

  • Good luck to you xx
