I am newly diagnosed with Grade 3 breast cancer and have been advised that I will receive chemo once every three weeks over 18 weeks.  My tumor is 6cm which they have said is a considerable size.

Does anyone have any experience of this type of chemo and is it severe is that why there is three weeks between treatments.

  • Hi Inlodwin,

I’m going for my wig fitting tomorrow. I’m in Scotland too, and as Ruby says, we get a free wig on prescription.

I live near Glasgow and the wig service at the Beatson is still open for face to face appointments, which is great.

I’ve got to say, my wig looks really nice and the ‘wig lady’ is lovely.

  • Hi, thanks for the replies. Helpful. I'm going to try the cold cap too. Can't bear to cut my hair at present. Never worn it short. Plus hairdressers all shut... What are you supposed to do? Think I will hold out and see what happens. However being realistic and have already looked at hats and scarves in prep.

  • Hi Iblodwin. The hair loss is the worst. I has hair down my back and thought if I cold chapped it would be fine but its heart wrenching having yr hair coming out 24/7. After my 2nd cycle my hair was just a complete tangled mess. I went from it down my back to my chin in the same day. I now just have a few bits left. I've never had short hair and I hate it but my wig helps and when I'm wearing it I have that little bit of confidence back. My advice unfortunately is to get it.cut short. Good luck xx

I finally shaved mine off yesterday. It was coming out on handfuls and my scalp was really sore. I was worrying about it but my daughter cut it in stages, including a Mohican before it all came off. My head and the last bits of hair are still quite sore and it is cold without so I’m wearing hats. I ordered a couple pre treatment, and have just ordered some bamboo beanies as I think they’re really soft and comfort is what I want right now.

I know it’s so hard thinking about it, I’ve cried a lot about my hair, it makes it so real, but I do feel a bit relieved now that it’s done. Sending hugs however you choose to do it.

  • You are being so strong Ruby, your hats will look great, after having 6 chemo sessions now mine is really thinning so I’ve resorted to wearing a cap...I feel like a teenager though!
    big hugs xxx

    • Hi folks, helpful comments. Find it difficult to imagine not having hair but vaguely resigned to it. Even so feel I should try the cold cap to at least give it a go. But then wonder if I'm not just wasting my time. Think I'm going to have to look at wigs. Already looked at hats and scarves. I would get my hair trimmed a bit shorter but the hairdresser's are still shut...hmmmm. just going to have to take it as it comes. Starting chemo this week. All rather daunting.

    Evening all,

I am having 2nd round on Wednesday and all weekend my head feels like it is being stabbed and ridiculous amounts of hair coming out. It's soul destroying. I've got less hair now than I did when I finished chemo 8 years ago using cold cap...bloody covid the hospital won't let you use it. It is just tangling as soon as I've got them out. Don't think it's going to hang on my longer. I have a wig which have to say looks better condition than my hair but I'm now stressing about it moving when I'm out. I know you can use tape...guessing you just put some on the inside.

  • So, did the cold cap work for you first time round?

  • I feel for you Delh. Mine came out in the bag load from 2nd round and it's still coming out and I cold capped. Went from waist length to chin length on the same day. Its soul destroying. I'm sure your wig is lovely. Does it not have adjustable straps to secure fit rather than use tape? Good luck.

Yes, cold cap worked for me. I did lose quite a bit but still had full head, no patches and a ponytail...absolutely gutted I can't use it this time.

My hair is thick, half way down my back more or less ringlets....I will never complain about curly hair ever again. Fingers crossed it comes back the same as often it doesn't!

It's not an easy search for curly wigs that don't look 'wiggy'
