Hi I’m 51 had my first mammogram 2 weeks ago.
I had  a letter this week and thought I’d be okay as it took 2 weeks.

I was asked to go back for more tests

Yesterday I was told they were wanting to test an area on my left breast as it was a concern, so I had another mammogram then an ultrasound.

Had a trainee who did my ultrasound she said I had Calcifications and they want to pump biopsy these,  she then examined me was okay  then did the scan she was ages and rough not kind or emphatic.

She then was worried about another area asking to get Tom who’s another doctor for a second opinion by then I started crying she asked why ??

Doctor Tom took  35 minutes he seemed annoyed with her and said where he can’t find itand made  her to show him the area she had worried about and he said it’s all okay and fine it’s  fibrous tissue.  She asked should she biopsy the one swollen lymph node in my arm pit he said to me have you been ill I said I have a slight mouth infection today ( I suffer shingles with stress ) he said to her yes to make sure it’s clear.

I was also told last week my brother was found dead in his flat aged 53 we are waiting for DNA to see if it is him !! So all this is so so hard

She did a biopsy of my arm pit lymph node, 5 times she tried it was agony I nearly passed out, then I had to go to the mammogram scanning room and have pump biopsy on the calcification, left breast left arm pit now I’m worried as lymph node is a worry and what if I’ve cancer and it’s spread ?

My youngest daughter is just 16 and I’m now anxious all day. I have to go back next week for results the doctor said don’t worry as if it is positive it’s tiny and caught early.

I had sepsis in my womb 5 years ago lost our baby at 5 months pregnant ended up in critical care in ICU had 11 blood transfusion in 3 months and it all gave me PTSD.

I have chronic IBS with travel anxiety and live on the Isle of Wight and chemo and radio is on the mainland

I’ve so much whirling in my head

They didn’t tell me how long to leave the sterile strips on my biopsy cuts when I can shower or wash bathe

sorry for the post just dreading walking in the room to get the results

  • And breathe !  I was recalled from 1st routine mammogram in 2015 for calcification and here I am alive & kicking!  Click on my name ti read my profile xx

  • Hi Lawcher welcome to the forum and sorry to hear how worried that you are it sounds like you have been through the mill for the last few years so little wonder your head is whirring. That experience at the hospital doesnt  sound like it has been very well handled either to inspire you with confidence.

In response to your query -leave the strips on until they start to come off themselves in the shower/bath  but dont rub them just pat dry they will come off when they are ready could be between 5-7 days but if the wound is not closed or you are not happy with it then do get back to them or your Nurse at your GP practice. Pleas do keep in touch and let us know how you are doing none of this is easy in any shape of form but we are here to listen and support you as much as we can so please do pop in and keep in touch.xxxxx

  • Nice guidelines (I'd always recommend checking them) say you should have a named BCN or someone you can contact and talk to. I think you could tell them how you are feeling and they would be very well placed to help you sort out some of these problems so you'd have less on your plate. Failing that the GP may be able to suggest something to help like counselling for the PTSD if you are not getting that altready. I was told a day before showering, but my biopsies were core not pump so didn't need steristrips. I think I saw a documentary about the IOW ferry for chemo. I wish I could remember it, I can see what a problem that could be for you if that was needed. I hope you get answers soon :(

  • Thankyou lovely to hear your clear and well . Sorry I don’t know the abbreviations WLE and NEDDY thanks for your suport x

  • Thankyou for the help with the sterile strips they are itchy day 3 but have done as you say.

Thankyou for your kind message xx

  • Hi I’ve been given no BCN no advice no help no support didn’t see a doctor and was told my results appointment was at the breast cancer nurse clinic next door I need to ring to see if my husband can come as when I asked if my fiend cooks come for my tests app they said no and everyone else Newley has someone with them.

My GP rarely sees anyone until really serious so I will hope to speak to someone soon. Yes the isle of Wight is really not good for cancer treatment and with Covid the ferries are restricted in lockdown and if it comes to it I’ll stay ina hotel for treatments if it’s daily hoping it will be not that   Thanks you for your help xxx

  • The clinic and BCN's must be reachable through the hospital main switchboard. your original appointment letter may have some numbers on it. At my hospital someone can accompany you to results appointments only (so that's been 3 appointments so far and we still need the results of the MRI on the 22nd). But the rules are set by the trust.

Is there a "pals" or Patient association at that hospital? Your GP surgury may have their details. They may have good advice for how to handle that particular hospital. I'd be phoning the department and starting to use my wooden spoon to stir them up a bit, but not everyone has the energy for that.

You deserve better support than the none at all you are getting, from your BCN's at that hospital. I'm cross on your behalf. But phone here there are BCN's here who can phone you back! they're on the green strapline at the top of the page :(

  • Thankyou ik really anxious today every pain  I think is cancer now as they didn’t explain  much to me thanks a lot for all your help xx
