I am planning on getting my garden back into shape this year as I have time on my hands. Any other gardeners out there ?

  • Woke to some snow this morning but it all went by lunchtime, phew!
I mowed the lawn a few days back as it was getting long (hubs did a weed and feed in the autumn) so I bet it shocked the poor grass!

    spring bulbs all looking lovely....

  • Just been re-reading some of the threads. I'm like you and love feeding the birds. It's been a real joy over the past few months sat in the conservatory when I don't feel well enough to do anything else just watching them on the feeders. We get all sorts including the occasional Sparrow Hall (not so pleasant!!). At the moment we must have at least 4 pairs of blackbirds, robbins, loads of sparrows and starlings, blue tits, great tits, yellow hammers and some buntings that visit regularly.  My hubby has been filling the feeders daily.

  • Had some sun yesterday so made a start on the garden to do list

Mirror and wall art finally on walls they were both 70th  birthday presents in October

Hubby been busy outside today in the cold( well I'm busy in kitchen ) new herb planter and potting table put together ready for when there's more sun lol

Better go feed him ..homemade leek and potato soup to warm him up lol

  • Hi Hockynut, can I ask what you feed your birds on, we have got a bird feeder an feed seed an various things from the kitchen, as soon as I put food out the pigeons come and eat all the food, we also have a few cats roaming round too, and those black and white birds are always in the garden. Dove

Hello Boobyloo. I have fed garden birds for years. Hang out one peanut feeder and one seed feeder somewhere with a bit of cover and the birds will come. They may take a few days to get used to it.

Dont put food on the ground, that will encourage the pigeons and the black and white birds, bloody magpies. The ground feeding birds will pick up crumbs that have dropped from the feeders.

Good luck with it. Once the birds get used to being fed it will cost you a fortune, worth it though.

  • Thank you for your advice will go and get some peanuts.Peanuts

  • Hi

I have a bird feeding stand. I'll post a picture tomorrow when it's light. I buy seed from pets at home or Haiths. Try to get seed without too much wheat in it as the pigeons love that. I also have suet balls and pellets. Try to situate the bird feeding station near too but not too close to some shrubs or trees so the birds have somewhere to hide. It may take some time to attract them but once they come they won't stop!!!

  • We have what I think is a dove breeder very near us so pigeons abound, we’ve stopped feeding the birds as the pigeons even manage to wriggle their way into spaces they aren’t supposed to!

  • Not a great picture but the hedge in the background gives the birds some shelter and protection and like I don't put food on the ground and the ground feeders get the spills from the feeders on the stand.
