Hi, I saw Consultant Anaesthetist for an opinion last week and got the go ahead to have a General Anaesthetic for a mastectomy which is great news.

I now have an appointment tomorrow with Surgeon to discuss treatment plan but I dont really know what to expect.  Will he tell me when surgery will take place, if I will need Chemo afterwards etc and will he explain the opertion at this stage.

I have never known anyone to be so pleased for getting an operation but I really just want to "evict" "Larry the Lump" as quickly as possible.

I am also wondering whether the Christmas holidays will delay things.

I am busy writing down a list of questions to ask, (reads like War and Peace), but if anyone has any suggestions on questions I really need to ask I would be really grateful for any suggestions.

Keep smiling.

    Hi Tinker bell

I am afraid that you may have got the wrong "Jo" as I am only scheduled to have my surgery on the 16th of January and am not considering recon at all.

It may be that you can give me some tips on the surgery Mask because I have not got a clue what is going on.

I have a pre op appointment on the 6th of January when hopefully they will give me more information like what sort of clothes to wear when the dreaded drain is in etc.

Hope you get someone to help you.

  • Hi

Think I may be the right Jo ? First thing I would say is that whatever reconstruction you have they are not a breast , however they look - but  I was unhappy with my implant , and made an appointment with the plastics consultant about 15 months ago , had a ct  scan to make sure that my veins etc would be suitable and then got put on the list about a year ago. I was due for the op in October but got bumped by someone with cancer who had the DIEP as part of their treatment plan - so be aware that you may have to wait a while and are not priority. I think depending on where you live will depend on the length of the list . The other thing to consider is your BMI , reading different blogs etc seems that a BMI over 35 leaves the chance of not being allowed on the list , this is due to the actual success of the operation and subsequently no need for further tidy ups, plus your actual physical health for what is a gruelling operation (I went to theatre at 8 am and came around in my room at 6pm)

I struggled with my breathing after the op , but was fine to come home after 4 days.

I have not had any real pain except when I sneeze , but my wounds are now itchy and my back is very sore , I have a meeting with physio on the 31st December.

Concerning my op , I am absolutely thrilled with the results so far , my surgeons were obviously very skilled and have made a great job of my boob , tummy and new tummy button, however it is still early days and my body needs to settle as it is currently quite swollen.

So yes I am very pleased with the results , but it is not a simple “yes you can have it” and then getting the surgery quickly , it is quite a long process unless part of your initial treatment plan.

Have you had any reconstruction yet ?

    Hi Jo

No I haven't had any reconstruction, I'm only having the mastectomy on the 16th of January.

I am not considering DIEP but when I have my pre op appointment with breast nurse I will discuss recon.

At the moment though I am not intending to go down that route because at my age I dont think it is an important issue and hubby just wants to get mastectomony and ALND over with.

I am aprehensive enough about the above so I think that will be enough for me Thinking

I'm glad to hear that you are pleased with your result and pray that you continue to improve.

Have a wonderful peaceful Christmas and lets hope all the ladies on her have a much healthier New Year.
