This all began on the Extreme Fatigue thread. On there several people wanted and needed inspiration/incentive to get out and walk. Many people see the benefits of it in their life and to help on this; mad journey, train ride, rollercoaster ride and other positively rude words journey called Breast Cancer.
It is not a thread created to make anyone feel less than they do at present. It is not a thread that will set people against one another. Being competitive with yourself or a simple challenge to yourself is the point, but not a race against others is a key premis.
The idea is that you can do any of these or none:

Either it will grow and blossom, with lots of lovely people benefiting. Or I will have egg all over my face – not for the first time in my chequered life and career.

My friend took me to Knit and natter This morning.Have missed a few so had lots to catch up on!!Well,we had a lovely time !!Aa usual all went by too quickly..
I took a cushion case which I am hand-sewing..I saw one in a shop at Christmas for £60!! And I thought,” Blow that I’ll make one myself..it is enormous so taking a while but the ladies loved the ( french) material..and I wore my hat which I mMADE a few years ago( to show off) but ..well.. lets say nobody loved it like I do...(Those perfectly formed scallop edges!! The way it kindly hides my face!) the little flower was hanging on by a thread one day all droopyand my sr in law pointed it out and I gently touched it and said “ thats how I am feeling”( I had just started another cold).
D who usually wears pastel framed specs against her beautiful white hair) had some gorgeous patent black brogues on with her jeans..we always notice what each other we are wearing.(between the two of us as we both like the others’style.She must be 80 ,she is such a nice interesting lady)had my customised cardi on and somebody liked the Fifi The Poodle brooch and I quickly said ,””I dont wear it anywhere posh”!! And immediately realised what I had said!they laughed.Knitting Ladies Circle Etiquette hey!!!xx

Had my first swim (outdoor) at my leisure club; first time since my Hosp,admission in Nov. Have only just felt fit enough. Enjoyed it soooo much. Felt am at last getting back to some semblance of normal.
Am starting my new Tai Chi class on Thurs night. It is just down the road from me, so much easier to get to than Maggies.
Friday is our third wedding anniversary, can't believe how quickly the time has gone. Instead of going out in the evening, we are going for lunch in a posh restaurant (in our hiking boots) and then going walking round Hollingworth Lake. We then return to said restaurant and have tea and cake. It will be the first time there since November too

Violetsniff I teach English. And as they were a cover teacher down this morning, I even taught a lesson! It was good to be back in the classroom though I'm grateful I havent jumped straight into the whole of my old job! And then I walked to my allotment to prove to myself that I'm not going into full immersion at work yet!
So here is sime good news: the rhubarb is coming, the rhubarb is coming!

I have been sewing all afternoon and finished my one cushion case...but I PRICKED MY THUMBNAIL TO THE QUICK with new sharp needle...and it is VERY sore!!!

Hi seaspirit Your first swim sounds lovely and your walk and lunch for your wedding anniversary.I am waiting for a mastectomy and really love walking and swimming.Could you tell me how soon after your op,you started to manage short walks if you can remember?

I had my mastectomy last April, had to have the op repeated 30 hours later due to haematoma developing. I still had quite a long walk out of the ward to the car the following day. I slept lots and rested lots, still pottered around home, but began very short walks outside about a week later, first of all ‘round the block’ then gradually further.
If you plan circular walks you can get home quickly if you find it too far. And remember that the anaesthetic takes a few weeks to fully leave your system, so feeling a bit wobbly is possibly that. But walking is a really good stamina building exercise post op, going further as and when you feel able. My walks are regularly 2 miles plus, sometimes further out into the country. Now that I’m well healed I often use trekking poles to help my leg joints, but I am 73!

Hi I had to reply to your question!
I was walking 1 - 2 hours about 3x per week up to op so that was my baseline I had a rt side mastectomy on 13th Dec. I walked 10 mins on 14th Dec. I did no walking on 15th Dec as it was bitter cold and the cold has such an effect on muscles post op. Then 16th I tried 20 mins but got a bit dizzy and had to go slow. 17th 15 mins on a little flat road. 19th I walked for over an hour. Was amazing but probably a mistake. By 2 weeks post op an hour was ok as long as I then rested. I have to say I sat down for almost all of the time that I wasnt walking for the first 3 weeks.
Im 9 weeks post op and can walk 3 hours in a stretch now.
It is so individual and I'm a bit of a nutter. I pushed myself harder than I needed to now that I look back. I think I just needed to then. A bit less than I describe woukd be wiser! The thing that I would definitely say is that going in the car bothered my back so that meant that travelling to walk confused the issue. Also flat predictable surfaces are a very good idea. Unpredictable uneven surfaces and gradients caused me a lot of pain very quickly- for me it worked to walk using my core as little as possible.

I started walking on day 2 being careful as a bit wobbly. I was in a week, waiting for a haematoma to resolve, By the end of the week I was walking outside enjoying the sun(summer) After my major abd op 2017, I walked with help on day 2, and. thereafter increased my distance daily. I firmly believe it was a factor in my quick recovery.
Agree with Moomy, when walking outside remember you have to get back, si circular walks are good. And if wobbly, take someone to hang onto; you don’t want to fall!
