Primary occult breast cancer - anyone else??

Hi

After a routine mammogram (I’m 53) I was diagnosed with primary occult breast cancer on Friday 13th October last year. I’m told that breast cancer appears like this rarely - in about 0.1% of patients. Basically I have several enlarged lymph nodes with the largest about 10mm, which I’m told is ‘not big’. I had every test and scan going but there are no tumours in my breast at all. I’ve had 3 cycles of Taxol (Paclitaxel) but had to skip the 4th as I had such bad problems with my hands and feet. So I had my first EC Therapy last week and since then I’ve felt awful. Just wiped out with nausea and fatigue, plus now I’m feeling shaky all the time. I’m normally the sort of person rushing about, never sitting still, and I have a teenage son with mobility difficulties who I look after. So sitting around doing nothing is weird for me. My boss has been great (I teach Law one night a week) and even though I’ve done work from home for cover tutors I’m desperate to get back to teaching. I just don’t know how I’m going to manage on the new chemo and feel like I’m letting my students down.

After chemo (3 more EC planned!) I’m up for axillary node clearance, then radiotherapy. Frankly I don’t know what to dread more - the ongoing nausea or the surgery?! I have great family and friends, a husband who is holding it all together for all of us, and a fab medical team, so I feel lucky. I try to pick out the positives/silver linings in everything to do with this rollercoaster journey BUT I still feel alone plus I have days like today where I’m not holding it my s**t together at all!

So I’m just reaching out to anyone out there who feels the same, or who has come across occult breast cancer, or who has advice or thoughts to share! Thanks.

Hi LabradorLass. Sorry to hear about your recurrence after 8 years and your poor mum’s as well. Hope yours gets treated successfully without chemo. It’s always on your mind worrying if it will come back. I used to read breast cancer was one one of the “better” ones to have if you were going to get cancer. I’m beginning to strongly disagree with this when I read daily on Twitter etc about the amount of women whose lives are never the same after their diagnosis and the number who are unfortunate enough to end up with secondaries. But as you say keep smiling and hope for the best.

Hi Sara08. It’s good to hear from others with the same diagnosis as yourself  as it makes you feel a little less alone on this journey that we’ve unfortunately had to make. As you say your situation and mine are very similar. I see there are 4 of us now on this site with the diagnosis of occult primary breast cancer - LabradorLass, ida74 and you and I. It’s good to have heard from you all.

Hey Everyone I am diagnosed with occult breast cancer with cancer in my lymph node and have been rushed to chemo first as there was a delay. My oncologist keeps mentioning a double mastectomy but I was wondering how many you had one? Many thanks and hope you are all doing well x

I had chemo first then an axillary node clearance then radiotherapy. No mastectomy at all. I was told there was no need as it would make no difference. I had a good 4 years with NED. Sadly I’m now stage 4. Who knows whether this would be the case if I’d had surgery? (Although I was never offered a mastectomy at all!)

  • Firstly sorry for your news. I was diagnosed 2008 chemo first to shrink it had 7 lymph nodes out and one mastectamy. Still here though sadly i have a patch in my pelvic bone bone 2016 and two suspect lymph nodes which have been stable on meds. Not sure why they have offered a double I would ask ?

     Sending love
