Feeling Wet

Hi Everyone,

My mother in law was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the end of March. We were able to care for her at home until a few weeks ago, and now she is in a hospice temporairily.

For some reason, she has a feeling that she is wet all the time - in her words - absolutely soaked through and dripping. She now also thinks she is covered in diarrhea. This is so frustrating for her as she thinks we are leaving her to sit there like that and she becomes extremely aggitated. It has got to the point where she is losing her hair and causing redness on her head from trying to dry her hair and her skin on her arms and legs is getting irritated as well. On Friday night she tried to climb over the rails of her bed, to go look for a way to get dry and ended up falling.

Can anyone suggest any way at all to help her with this? We have tried to convince her that its not true and her brain is playing tricks on her. We have changed her clothes several times. Tried hair dryers, cutting off her hair, lighting rubbing her skin with towels but nothing works. Nothing we can do, short of sedation seems to work. Its truly a horrible helpless feeling watching her cry because she thinks we are neglecting her. Watching a 76 year old woman cry for her mom to look after her because no one else is is heartbreaking.

(FYI - I cant name all the medication she is on as they are trying different combinations all the time. I do know there are steriods and pain medication).

Any suggestions at all would be appreciated - not even really looking for medical advice. Just hoping maybe somone else has experienced this and may know of a way to help.

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear about the problems your mother-in-law is experiencing. I don't have any experience to offer with this but I noticed that your post had gone unanswered. This may be because nobody else in the group has experienced this or just that they haven't read your post yet.

You could post your question in ask a nurse and one of the specialist cancer nurses will aim to reply within 2 working days. I presume that you have already spoken to your mother-in-law's CNS and s/he hasn't been able to offer any solution.

When you feel up to it, it would be really useful if could pop something about your mother-in-law's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
