Cancellation by hospital of radiotherapy appointment....

Hi everyone,

My husband started his 5 higher dose radiotherapy treatments last Monday (as opposed to 30 smaller doses), he had 4 daily appointments as planned with the last treatment arranged for this coming Monday as the machine was having some 'routine' maintenance work done on Friday. Then, around 6pm yesterday evening I received a telephone call from someone at the hospital to say the machine maintenance had not gone as planned and as a result of this my husband's last appointment for this coming Monday was cancelled!! The person who rang said someone would ring with an update sometime on Monday and I wondered if anyone else has experienced this situation during their treatment. When I asked what I should do about the tablets my husband is currently taking following strict instructions, the person calling had no idea and said they would get someone else to phone me also on Monday to discuss this. Have to say I am not very happy with this situation and feel totally in limbo just now. Apart from feeling rather tired and sleeping more than usual (as expected), my husband had been coping with the treatments quite well, but the cancellation of his final treatment has got him down a bit. Just hoping the delay will only be a short one and that I can re-arrange transport without too many issues. Thanks for reading, just needed to vent a bit Slight smile

  • I was putting my shoes on for a scan (MRI or CT) when the phone went and it was the Radiotherapy dept saying they had to postpone my appointment because the machine had broke and they were waiting for the engineer to visit.   Like you, they said someone would phone to re-arrange the appointment.  They did and I had the scan about 7-10 days later.

  • Thank you for your reply Mmum, and I was sorry to read about your experience. One positive I suppose with this is that you were able to stay home rather than actually arriving at the hospital to be told your appointment was cancelled. Its hard when planned appointments get cancelled as you get all prepared for them.

  • HI

oh how frustrating and worrying for you both. Sadly machines develop faults and breakdown and need maintenance so hopefully the appointment is merely postponed rather than cancelled completely.

During G's treatment communication from his medical team was poor (partly because he was deliberately trying to exclude me and they believed him when he told them he had made the 60mile round trip to the hospital himself....) but if you don't get a call by around lunchtime tomorrow I would call them for an update.  Even going forward, if it something that is worrying you or frustrating you, call them. If nothing else it gives you a little peace of mind knowing that you ahve done all that you could.

Sending love and light and hugs and positive thoughts

  • Hi Wee Me,

Thank you for your reply and advice. I will certainly be chasing things tomorrow afternoon if I haven't heard anything by then. Due to my husband having poor hearing and memory, I do all the telephone communications and make sure I am included in any appt discussions which is a bonus. Must have been difficult at times for you when you didn't know what your husband was saying to his team. With it being my husband's last treatment I am hoping he will get another appointment quite quickly, will have to see what tomorrow brings and I will add an update when I know what's happening.

  • Hi Wee Me,

Quick update - hospital are hoping to complete my husband's final treatment tomorrow (Tuesday) providing the engineers get the machine fixed today! I have also been able to arrange transport, our local RVS TAP team have been amazing. Now keeping everything crossed and hoping the hospital don't ring again. Will be good to get that final treatment done Slight smile

  • sounds like a positive day.

    love n hugs
