Hi, a newbie here, have just had a colonoscopy 2 days ago & the results were  not what I was expecting ... seems I have a malignancy in my sigmoid colon , several biopsies were taken at the time so I guess it's a waiting game for results, a C.T. scan etc; etc;  I will be treated at Lincoln County Hospital.

I am a bit shell shocked at the moment & when being seen with results after colonoscopy felt as if she was talking to someone else not me. It's a good job my husband was sat with me to ask some questions , still having a job taking it in.....

  • Hi

Yes it is a shock to be told there and then - I was diagnosed last July and felt like it wasn't really happening.

You will hopefully have scans quite quickly and then your results will be discussed at the weekly MDT meeting (multi disciplinary team) which consists of all the experts e.g. The surgeon, chemo specialist, colorectal nurse etc. I then met with a member of the surgical team who explained what treatment I would be having and over what time scale. I also met my colorectal nurse who answered any questions and gave me some books to read. My husband came with me as 4 ears are better than 2 and I jotted down the questions that I had thought of.

The waiting is horrible but once you get a treatment plan in place you will feel a bit more positive.

I was advised not to use Google as the information is out of date and inaccurate - this board is very good and also the Beating Bowel Cancer forum

Sorry you've had to join us but please ask about anything - you can guarantee somebody will have been though it already and will be happy to share advice/experience.

    Take care

    Hi Gemcollector 1

I too had a tumour in my sigmoid colon. I went in to have the sigmoid part removed due to an infection that perforated the bowel.  Imagine my shock when pathology came back saying there was a tumour. It had never been picked up in all the scans and blood tests.

Had 12 cycles of chemo and am coming up to my 1 year remission.

Try and stay strong you will at times feel that you are alone and no-one understands that is natural.

I will keep you in my prayers!

    Maggie

Thanks Maggie , keep well x

  • Hi Gemcollector1

I too had the same experience on the 27th of Feb. I had had abdominal issues and bleeding for a while and a colonoscopy was ordered. I went alone and arranged for my niece to pick me up as I was to be sedated. When the consultant delivered the news in the recovery room i thought I was dreaming. I was expecting a totally different diagnosis and as of cancer I had told myself if it was then they wouldn't know straight after. Yes the waiting has been painful and most folk here think it's the most difficult time but once your results are out and treatment is in place you should be ok. I am hoping to hear of my treatment plans tomorrow after the mdt meeting. I must say I only joined a few days here but I have been overwhelmed with the support and positive stories from people who have been on this journey. You have joined the right group and you will get all the support you need from people on the same journey or have been.

Keep positive, eat well and healthy and you will beat this.

    All the best!!

Thankyou Ramzy, I will try to stay positive & sending all best wishes to you through your treatment & beyond , keep me in the loop if that's O.K. x

  • Thanks gemcollector1. Of course will keep you in the loop.

I have just returned from the hospital as results were in today and they told me it's not spread anywhere else but due to tumour size and because I'm also a small person with a compact pelvis  they will have to shrink tumour through radiotherapy then chemo before surgery. I have also been told that since tumour is a bit up I may not need a permanent colostomy bag.

I suppose it's all about being patient and keeping positive (have waited a month from diagnosis to results)

I hope your results are back sooner and treatment starts asap.

    All the best.

Hello again Ramey, I bet this last month has felt like the longest ever for you. I am expecting to have the same wait. Spoke to a nurse specialist this morning to ask if I should cancel a 4 day trip to the Dales at end of week, she kindly made sure my C.T. wouldn't be till next wk & said a break would do me good. My husband is struggling with my diagnosis on top of suffering with pancreatitis, so needs a break as much as me if not more really ....
Pleased to hear that you are not looking at permanent bag , that is something I fear..... my tumour is 25cms in to sigmoid colon.
Like so many of us this yr much will have to be put on hold, but hope we can make up for it before long.
Where are you having treatment if you don't mind me asking ?
Hope you get your radiotherapy / chemo started soon & your tumour shrinks to an operative size quickly.
    All the very best.

  • Gemcollector1 - Definitely agree a trip away will do a world of good and a welcome break from all this. I have every faith once you get your results things should get better and any positive news on your side will have a good knock on effect on your husband too. In terms of size I had (prior to my meeting today) been advised by friendly folk on here it is not necessarily a major factor, so I wouldn't worry much.

Just take one day at a time and things will begin to slowly fall back into place. Enjoy your trip to the Dales and think of nothing else.

I am having treatment at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley West Mids but for Radiotherapy I will have to go New Cross in Wolverhampton as Dudley does not have the facilities.
