I’ve been diagnosed with a tumour in the colon and I’m having surgery at the end of the month, I’ve been told I will most likely have astoma when I wake up , which I have no problem with, but I’m interested to know what the recovery time is and how long are you in hospital.?
any thoughts on this procedure and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Lillyelo
l had surgery 2years ago and they removed the.bottom half of my colon my appendix and a part of the small intestine. I do not have a stomach but my procedure kept me in hospital for a week. I have been on chemo for the last eighteen months. I would think that the addition of the stoma may make the stay a little longer but I am sure you will get advice on that from another contributor. Keep your strength up and keep fighting and the best of luck
Peter
Thanks Peter , that’s a long time on Chemo for you, and that must be draining?
I haven’t had time to think about anything like that yet , it’s been a whirlwind 5 weeks, with so much going on and taking everything in.
i am going for my results on Wednesday and I will know more, but I’m petrified to say the least .
Thank you for the info on your length of time in hospital, so I guess I’ll have to accept 10 days …. I’m not sure how I will feel about that as I’m so determined at not being a patient for a long time
Just a little info about me i now live with my family in London having moved from Nottingham and I am 81 and my cancer is contained but is stage 4 m.
i know it’s no fun but think positive. Your being given a chance by a very good health service and the best thing you can do is to try and desires as ur doesn’t help. I go to a centre called Maggies at Charing Cross Hospital and thry deal with cancer and you can chat, chill have coffee tea meet others in the same situation and they will all talk to you and tell you ways of getting through what you are going through and not judge pester you with advice.
one last plea from me. Please do not be tempted to go on the internet to find out about your problem As that will really blow your mind
Ask the doctors and medical staff the questions and they will give you the answers that meet your symptoms.
Try not to pre think the future, get the results and deal with the results not what is going around in your head. And hopefully you have, like me, a good family support. Use them, don’t keep them in the dark, talk and be honest because believe me they are going through it just like you are,
let me know what news you get and I hope some of this helps.
best of luck Peter
Hi Lillylo and a warm welcome to the board. I was in for 5 days and only allowed home once the nurses were happy that I was comfortable with my stoma.
Recovery at home is about 5 weeks with no lifting anything heavier than a kettle of water with 1 cup in and no driving until you can safely perform an emergency stop. I’ve attached a link to a booklet about the op which you may find helpful?

Hope everything goes well
Take care

Hi Lillylo , am following a similar path, tumour in ascending colon, surgery hopefully end of month. Mind blowing isn't it? I feel fine in myself , was anaemic so that's what flagged this up, thank goodness. I will be eternally grateful to the doctor who acted so quickly.
Nurse told me 3 to 5 days in hospital, 8 weeks recovery. Best wishes xx
Good morning furry Pete, Thsnk you for your kind support and advice, I’m 77 and I have a wonderful family, my Daughter is my strength who comes with me to all appointments as it’s such a lot to listen to , my Son in law is equally important in my journey and I have two beautiful Grandsons who are giving me the will to carry on.
I agree looking for answers online isn’t a good idea , but I’m so happy to have joined this group.
I will definitely keep you updated on my adventures and no doubt there will be some , knowing me they will be humerus.
many thanks for your support and kind words, lillylo
Hi Karen, Thank you for your information and advice I will check out what you have sent me. I fully expect about 8 weeks recovery, but 5 days in hospital is good and with possibly having a stoma too .
Thanks again for your help and advice. Best wishes x
