I'm a 77 year old female recently diagnosed with bowel cancer. I am awaiting surgery for right hemicolectomy.
I feel well without symptoms, and very undecided regarding the operation. I am wondering if anyone knows the success rate for my age group?
I hope to connect with people here for support and comments, hope to chat soon
Hi Abalone and a warm welcome to the board. I’ve had a quick look through previous posts and have seen that Mena is a similar age to you and had a right hemicolectomy a couple of weeks ago.
Your surgical team will not operate unless they’re sure of a successful outcome. They will discuss all the risks involved and what percentage of patients have problems etc. but I think they have to do that as a matter of procedure. It can sound a bit daunting but the alternative of not having the operation and the tumour blocking the bowel is not something that you want to happen.
If you type right hemicolectomy in the search box at the top of the screen then it will bring up previous posts that you can read.
We’re all at different stages of treatment and recovery on here and happy to help and support you through yours
Take care

Hi this is Mena I have just been discharged from hospital after having right hemicolectomy on Monday. Thankfully all went well I will recover at home it was a keyhole operation and I did not have much pain to be honest.
Now will have to wait plus minus 3 weeks for results from labs to let me knowcif i will need chemo or not . I was also nervous about the surgery that is very normal but thankfully it had not spread to other organs. I hope you decide what is the best for you.
But inwascakso undecided due to my age will be 75 in 2vweejs plus the fact that I am diabetic and was born with one kidney only.
All those things made me nervous . For now I am no sorry I had the surgery and its early days. Just eating small amounts and little but eventually you will be having your normal food just low fibre for now.
As I said after such big operation I feel much better than I expected. So for now I am happy and will recover slowly . I wish you all the best but you are the only one that can decide if you want surgery or not. Take care and all the very best.
Mena
Hi Mena, many thanks for your reply and for sharing your experience regarding surgery. I am continuing research and reaching out to people with similar problems.
Your reassurance and positivity is very helpful to me. Meanwhile take care and I wish you a good recovery.
Hi Abalone, I too am 77 and had a right keyhole hemicolectomy this February, Stage 2. With no further treatment needed as the tumour was removed and there was no spread.
I was in hospital for 3 days, and experienced no pain at all. I did get tired for the first few weeks and I did have to watch what I ate, or suffer the consequences! It does take time for the bowel to adjust and I am still have to be a bit careful.
Other than that things are back to normal and I’m sure you will be very soon. Just remember to rest a lot in the first few weeks and eating a little often, worked best for me.
Hope all goes well with your op and recovery.
Obrigada
Hi Obrigada
Reading your message made me realise and add more . I felt exactly the same. I was in hospital for a little longer but only because on the 3rd day I vomited and had no bowel movement but was given a NG and sorted that immediately. But still was there only 5 days and as you no pain but was up walking the next day had shower the 2nd day and was mobile right away.
Been home since Saturday the 26th Oct as my surgery also keyhole right hemicolectomy was done on the 21st October. So far I have found same as Obrigada that eating small amounts and soft foods for now I eat bfast lunch supper and always have something mid morning and mid afternoon.
I am on low fibre for a while and I suppose will.start introducing high fibre later love on. As a 75 year old next week I was slightly nervous as inam diabetic and only have 1 kidney ( was born with only 1 kidney). And because of these health issues age and the fact that I had 3 C sections was worried that the keyhole surgery could turn to open surgery due to scar tissue.
But myself family and friends cannot believe how well I am doing and mostly that I have no pain and had a few small cuts on my belly .
I am walking around the house up and down stairs shower everyday all this unaided and eating. My bowel movement starting to get normal but regular (which never happened before ).
So really still cannot believe I had this major surgery and feel so well. I like you Obrigada also thankfully before the op was told it has not spread but still waitting for the results and if I need further treatment like chemo etc which I am praying I want need.
But if if do I feel so positive and its so nice to see other people with very similar situation had the same positive outcome it really makes one feel so much more positive and hopeful. Thank you so much for sharing your story and like you I am also so thankful and also can only say " Obrigada to the wonderful medical team that did such a wonderful job ".
Take care and keep getting stronger every single day.

Hi Obrigado, many thanks for the reply and for sharing your experiences. I am booked for surgery November 27th. I have no symptoms with no evidence of spread and feel well as always.
I am not nervous regarding the operation but have much anxiety about the future going forward. However your story has alleviated some of my stress. It's helpful to speak to someone of similar age and diagnosis.
I will let everyone know how things go,and meanwhile I wish you a problem free recovery and hope hope all goes well for your future.
Thanks again Abalone
