Hi
my husband had a colonoscopy on 5th Jan where they found an 8cm cancer approx 10cm up in the rectum we were called into the “little room” and told that it was malignant.
He had a staging CT on the 9th and the MRI today (11th) having more bloods done and the MDT is next Thursday but now we won’t hear anything for two weeks.
From everything moving at such a speed to just stopping the waiting is the worst part.
My question is rental cancer is slow growing but it’s already 8cm? Is that not large? he’s had no typical symptoms no bleeding no weight loss the nhs postal bowel screening he did last year was negative, blood tests leading up to December have all been normal.
His only symptoms are a change in bowel habit since September 23 and what he thought were piles.
Im glad I found this forum I feel I’m going to be asking loads of questions sorry in advance
Hi Tracey Ann
I had my operation last year on the 14th October the pathway your husband has been on so far is very similar to mine, once I'd had my colonoscopy I was put on a 2 week pathway schedule and was operated on 3 weeks after the colonoscopy my tumour was 10cm and was removed successfully I've not had to have any chemotherapy which is good for me but by the sound of it your husbands treatment and time line looks similar to mine and I'm sure they will have him in ASAP so send my best to your husband and tell him to be strong along with you.
Regards Andy
Hi @Tracyann and a warm welcome to the board. Size does not matter in this situation! The scans will check if there is any spread to other organs or suspected lymph node involvement and then the MDT will decide on a treatment plan. Yes bowel cancer is very slow growing and also very treatable - it can be tough at times but doable.
Rectal cancer is often treated with chemoradiotherapy prior to surgery to shrink the tumour. I was diagnosed in 2016 and, if you click on my name, then you can see my treatment timeline. I had 5 weeks chemoradiotherapy and used to get the earliest appointment then go into work afterwards? It obviously depends on what your husband does for a living but please speak to the help desk as Court suggested before doing anything rash?
Ive attached a copy of the booklet that I was given at my first meeting which may help with terminology etc.
