I had bowel cancer surgery October 14th which was very successful but I'm really struggling with all the after effects that come with this condition especially bowl movements I really have to think before I go out anywhere....

  • I had a surgery on 13/11/23 to remove part of my large intestine. I’m either constipated or have diarrhoea, there’s no inbetween. I have spoken to my consultant about it and he reassures me that things will improve. Have you spoken your the colorectal team about it?

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board. It can take a while to settle down but it’s worth talking to your colorectal team about it. Do you use loperamide/immodium? Once you’ve had some bowel removed then things tend to travel through more quickly so less water gets absorbed from the stool - the immodium slows it down allowing more to be absorbed. It could also be worth keeping a food diary to see if certain foods make the problem worse. What sort of operation did you have? There’s a bit in the booklet below about bile acid malabsorption which can occur after a right hemicolectomy

Hope some of this helps and also practice the sphincter exercises so you can told it in until the urge passes and then find a toilet

    Take care

  • Hi,  , all the above is good help. I always tended towards constipation, but once the dam had broken, often went into loose, and/or clustering. I still make sure I know where any toilets are, just in case!!! But it gets manageable, you are still in very early days!!
