Diagnosed last Friday

Hello. I think I'm still in shock and my diagnosis hasn't quite sunk in yet.

After a colonoscopy last Friday, my surgeon has written on my report, 30mm colorectal cancer and malignant colonic tumour. 10 biopsies were taken, so waiting for confirmation, but I think it's pretty certain.

Plan of action as I understand it, is that a CT scan will be happening next, then I will be scheduled for keyhole surgery to remove the tumour. Depending on what they find, that will determine whether chemotherapy is required or not.

I know I'm nowhere near being the first person to have had to go through this, as this group wouldn't exist with all of you heroes in it, but it certainly feels like I'm in a lonely place at the moment.

  • Hello and welcome,

I'm also new to the group, I was admitted to hospital on 10/11/23 with appendicitis. I had a CT scan where they found a 10 by 8 cm tumour. I was told by the doctor that came to deliver the news that he was almost certain it was cancerous. My haemoglobin was 76 ferritin 11 so I was given a blood transfusion and antibiotics intravenously every 8 hours for the appendicitis. On the morning of the 13/11/23 I went for emergency keyhole surgery to remove my appendix and part of my right large colon (right hemicolectomy). 14/11/23 I was in a lot of pain so they upped my oral morph. 16/11/23 I was finally discharged, I was still very uncomfortable but managing to walk around more.

5/12/23- I had an appointment with the specialist nurse who confirmed I had cancer and spoke about the different chemotherapy I will be offered once I meet the oncologist. I’m still awaiting the appointment.

Sorry I can’t be any more help, I didn’t have biopsies due to the appendicitis.

  • Hello Paul66,

Welcome to the Club! On these pages you are in good company and most of us have been where you are now. Any queries - just ask and also try to avoid Internet searches. For a selection of personal experiences just click on anyone's name and you should be able to see their own stories through the treatment process.

Thank you Rachael. It's only the start of day three for me, since I was diagnosed, but it seems like ages. Hope you are more comfortable now and not finding movement too difficult anymore.

    Thank you Dulac

  • Thank you. I have a few pains that come and go but nothing that requires painkillers. I can walk around now without pain which is great!

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board from me too. That sounds like the standard treatment plan for a colonoscopy tumour and, as you say, the post surgery histology report will confirm whether you need any follow up chemo but we’ll cross that bridge with you if you get to it.

It does come as a shock but as Dulac says, stay away from google as it can be scary and out of date. We’re happy to share advice and experience on here and the support desk is available on the number below if you want to talk to someone?

It can feel a bit lonely - I know i didn’t know anyone else who’d had bowel cancer when I was diagnosed - but there is lots of support on here and the bowel cancer uk board.
You’ll be allocated a support nurse at your first meeting and I’ve attached a copy of a booklet that I was given at mine which may help with the terminology etc.

Thank you Karen. I have just downloaded that booklet and have been reading through it this morning. Thank you for confirming that my time will be well spent reading it.
