I go to hospital tomorrow 18/12 to begin my radiotherapy I also have been given my oral chemo capecitabine to start tomorrow as well. This treatment will go on for 6 weeks due to a break at Christmas and new year.

i have been advised of common side effects eg sore and red palms and feet, diarrhoea, tiredness etc. How long after treatment could this last?

how long after treatment did you get your operation date?

most comments I have read have been people having ops first

  • Hi  Good to hear that your treatment is due to start. Any side effects tend to start after the first few weeks and can continue for a few weeks after stopping treatment. Having said that I didn’t find it too bad and continued working part-time in my office job throughout.

The radiotherapy continues working for about 6-8 weeks after the physical treatment stops then you’ll have a scan to see how effective it’s been and discuss the next stage with your consultant from there.

Chemoradiotherapy is usually used for people with rectal cancer to shrink the tumour as much as possible before the op leaving as much bowel as possible to rejoin. People with tumours higher up in the colon have more available bowel to rejoin so the tumour is removed without needing shrinking first.

    Take care

  • Thank you for your reply. I am going to try to work from home initially but find it promising that you were able to work part time. It’s knowing what to expect after treatment has finished that you have shared which is very informative than you
