Metastatic to lung

Hi.  My mum had her rectum removed 5 yrs ago due to cancer, but there was a small area they were unable to remove.

Unfortunately, she just got diagnosed with metastatic cancer as it has now moved to her lung.

She is mentally strong, but after 2 miscarriages, 30yr of managing with a stoma, rectum removal, hernia removal, moving stoma 3x .. you can imagine she is exhausted of the thought of any further surgery.  Fact is that she had a stroke a few years ago and because her knees have packed in, she is not very physical either.  So she is not in a physical state to have such a long complex surgery.

We will find out what, if any treatment options she has in the next 2 weeks, but wanted to give context of what my mum is facing and if anyone is / has been thru a similar journey.

Tnx a bunch!

  • Hi

So sorry to hear about your mum and it is hard when there is competing health needs .

My mum had a lung resection back in 2016 . Some people have open surgery and it is much more invasive in terms of surgery and recovery by all accounts . But some people have a procedure called Vats that is done by keyhole . My mum was home two days later snd fully recovered in two weeks . We were so surprised. Others sometimes use radio frequency ablation which again is less invasive.

I would certainly wait to see what her team suggests but despite the anxiety we had over the situation it was easier than expected in the end . As with every other spread location and size are big factors .

Send your mum our best regards and let us know how she gets on .

    Take care ,
