Hi, I am new to the group. I was diagnosed with stage 3 Colo-rectal cancer at the beginning of the covid pandemic. The main symptom that I had at this time was fatigue, which I had first dismissed as part of getting older. Thanks to the work of my brilliant GP, who referred me to the hospital. I feel incredibly lucky to have started my treatment just as the lockdowns began.

As part of my treatment I was introduced to Active Against Cancer, through the hospital. This involved me attending a gym three times per week, where the incredible staff worked wonders in getting me fitter in preparation for my up-coming surgery. Going to the gym had never been my idea of fun, but I can't tell you how much good it did me.

Prior to my surgery, I had 5 days of intense Radio-therapy which shrunk the tumour in size. I did not have any noticeable ill affects from this.

The surgery to remove the tumour went well and the next thing I had to deal with was managing my Ileostomy. I was discharged from hospital, but due to a breakdown of communication caused again by the Covid lockdown, The lack of after care resulted in my wound becoming infected. Once again my GP came to my aid and following being given anti-biotics I was back on track.

The pandemic caused me wait 10 months for a Stoma reversal, instead of the predicted 6 months. In this time it had become herniated, which is apparently fairly common. In-between my 2 surgeries, I returned to the A.A.C. gym where they did gentle exercises and relaxation technique classes.

I am now having my final round of Colonoscopies and CT scans as part of my follow-up treatment.

Overall I feel very lucky having such wonderful care.
