I'm not sure I belong on here but I need a bit of understanding from people who have been here. I haven't been diagnosed but all of my symptoms point to colon cancer. I am awaiting a urgent colonoscopy, the specialist said I will get an appointment any day now. I've been in so much pain for 6 years, I've been on morphine to try and help it and in recent months the pain has gotten so much worse, my bowel habits changed about a year ago and I've got a lot of weird and wonderful symptoms. I'm beyond exhausted all the time. I've been telling myself im fine and it's nothing to worry about but deep down I'm petrified.

  • Hi Freydis I’m sorry to hear that you’re in pain and have been suffering for so long. I’m very alarmed that you’ve been prescribed morphine for pain relief without a diagnosis. I assume you haven’t been prescribed it for very long? There are other reasons why you may be experiencing problems. I know it’s easier said than done, but you really do need to wait for your colonoscopy. All sorts of bowel issues can be identified by this. Try not to assume the worst, and don’t google your symptoms. Trusted sites like Macmillan, Cancer Research, Bowel Cancer UK, and the NHS are the sites you should look at if you feel you need to. Wishing you a speedy appointment and diagnosis.

  • Hi Freydis

Sorry you are in pain but like Jools63 said there’s many causes for Bowel changes my husband can testify to that. He had years of discomfort lots of investigations was firstly diagnosed with polyps IBS the diverticulitis

I had one fit test and cancer and 96% of those tests prove polyps or similar.
Once you have you colonoscopy you will have more idea of next steps if and are needed

Im a little confused as to why your on morphine? Do you have other health complaints?
when I went in for my lobectomy they steered away from morphine as I had only just had my reversal and couldn’t take morphine as it can cause constipation  I’d had one blockage after my reversal and couldn’t go through that again

    Best wishes

  • Hi Freydis

    You are very welcome here.

I hope you get your colonoscopy appointment through swiftly as they give a great internal view of what is happening. They are also a great springboard in to swift follow on actions, should there be a need.

Some hospitals do sadly have rather bad backlogs - please don't feel that any delays are that your case is not important to them.

If you have any questions or queries that could help alay your fears, please feel free to ask.

  • Hi. Thank you for replying. I've been on morphine for 6 years, I have got other health conditions so when i started getting so much pain in my bowels they just left me on it. I speak with opioid nurses regularly. Some bowel problems have already been ruled out but unfortunately bowel polyps run in my family. Its probably just that but because I've been left in pain for so long and am having now more worrying symptoms my Dr is very concerned which has frightened me. I won't use Google I know that would just make me worry more. Thank you

  • Thank you for your reply. Yes I have got other health problems but I've been on morphine for a very long time now. I've tried a lot of other pain killers over the years but with the pain getting so much worse they have left me taking it. One nurse recently suggested putting me on methadone for the pain but I turned it down. Polyps rum in my family so its probably just that but I'm worried that if I've had them for this long and with the new symptoms I'm getting they may be more to worry about. Thank you

  • Thank you. My drs secretary has told me that I will have an appointment any day now but there's a long waiting list so they are squeezing me in. I hope it's not too long now as I'm in so much pain and it's worrying me. Thank you so much.
