Hello
My name is Ruth and I will be 47 later this month. I was finally diagnosed with rectal cancer a few weeks ago. Prior to this numerous biopsies indicated that the tumour was precancerous however when the tumour was removed and biopsied it was cancerous. I have had 2 operations - the first 8 hour ESD procedure didn’t work in removing the tumour so I had to have a second more conventional op where my rectum and the tumour were removed. I now have a stoma bag. Chemo is due to start this week.
I am scared of the various possible side effects. I am 6 weeks post op and have tried to get my fitness up and be healthy. I wondered whether anyone could recommend vitamin supplements or anything else which helped them through chemo? I would really appreciate any advice.
Many thanks
Hi Ruth and welcome to the board. To be honest they don’t really like you taking supplements when you’re having chemo in case there’s any sort of interaction - i would discuss it with your oncologist first. Getting yourself fit and healthy is probably the best advice.
Chemo does have a lot of side effects but there are lots of pills and potions to combat them and if one doesn’t work then the nurses can usually suggest an alternative. I’ve attached a link to a post that we started about chemo top tips- please don’t panic - you would be very unlucky to encounter every side effect but sometimes it’s good to know what’s ‘normal’ and what isn’t.

I don’t know what chemo you’ll be having but I would recommend cream for your hands and feet - Aveeno with Shea is often recommended - and gloves with grips for getting things out of the fridge in the house. If there’s oxaliplatin involved then you might find it helpful to cover your mouth with a scarf when leaving the chemo unit and outside if it’s chilly
Hope this helps but please post if you’ve any worries
Take care

Wondered if you might find this helpful as some research pointing to maintaining what you can through treatment.
Biggest mistake my mum made was not hydrating properly .
