My mam has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer and has to have major op to remove it. I was ok up until now but ran out of steam today. Not too sure how to be strong to support them through it.  Think just need time out to sort my head out.

  • Hi Shaz72

It's early days, so try to be patient and kind to yourself.

Things I found really helpful when I was diagnosed was people not trying to reassure me of outcomes, but simply being there to make me smile and enjoy life, and to actively listen if i wanted to talk about things.

I'd also say the relationships that I've valued most at this time are those who have been brave and honest enough to openly discuss with me how THEY feel about my cancer and the impacts it has.

Some other things you may find helpful:

  • Hi Shaz72 and welcome to the board. Cancer unfortunately affects both the patient and those close to them but there is a lot of support available. We’re always happy on here to listen or answer any questions that you might have and the support desk on the number at the bottom of this post are really helpful. Is there a Maggies Centre at the hospital nearby - you could pop in there if so.

As Crumpets says it’s important to take care of yourself and have time for yourself and this will give you the strength to support your mum

    Take care

  • I myself had bowel cancer but all is ok. It's curable cancer and after operation and removable all will be ok. Yes, it will take time. Just never show to the patient that something major happened and you also don't feel it.
