My dad is currently undergoing chemo for rectal cancer. The first round seemed to be okish. But this 2nd lot has hit hard. He is suffering with severe stomach cramps and pain after eating. And even in the evenings when he hasn’t eaten. He had no pain with the cancer. Is this normal? Apologies if this isn’t acceptable to ask but I just want some advice on what to expect.
thank you I’m advance x
Hi, Locket1987 , I too had no pain with the cancer, but it will depend on where the cancer was, whether he has had an operation to remove the intruder, and what the chemo is. Then someone can perhaps jump in if theirs is similar. Hope that makes sense! All the best to you both
Thank you for your reply. No operation yet. It’s rectal cancer and right at the opening (sorry didn’t know how she’s to say that) we was told it’s ‘localised curable and non aggressive’ at diagnosis. the chemo is once every three weeks through the drip and the 2 weeks of tablet form ( I don’t know the name as it’s in my dads bedroom and he’s asleep) he is due 4 rounds then radio with chemo then possibly an operation but they said he may not need it.
Just seems odd that he’s having such bad pains now and diarreah and the anti diarrreah tablets don’t seem to stop it.
I feel awful worrying as I know some people have it so much worse but I’m just so anxious my dad is my best friend and I’m so scared.
sorry if I’m not using the correct words or language this is all new x
Ok, so you are at the start of the journey, but take heart that they said ‘localised curable and non aggressive’ at diagnosis. I had rectal but went straight to surgery, so can't comment on the regime your dad is following. Perhaps Kareno62 can help? Sending ((hugs)) to you both
Thank you so much. It’s so nice you replied xx
I hope you are ok in your journey x
Hi Locket1987
My mum’s second was one of her worst cycles but three and four were actually better .
She did get a lot of colic type pains with the oral chemo tablets but please do encourage him to contact his team as they will look at the dose of everything including his anti diarrhoea meds . Small adjustments can significantly relief symptoms and make it much more manageable.
My mum took over the counter buscopan for the stomach pains and that helped a lot along with a hot water bottle .
I looked into her room one night and she was rolling around her bed in pain .
Please do contact his specialist nurse and let them help make this a bit easier for him.
Take care ,

Thank you so much Court. He’s been using buscopan but not quite helping, haven’t tried the hot water bottle that’s a great shout! . We have informed his nurse and oncologist they’ve said they may adjust at the next clinic which is Tuesday. So fingers crossed. Xx
Oh Faloola . That’s the exact amount of weight my mum lost . I think they get concerned if it drops too much . Mum still talks about the throat spasm . It’s such a horrible side effect .
How are you tonight ? Mum got a scan appointment through . It’s that time again .
You do sound a bit rough . Are you scanning soon ?
