I’m Graham from Cardiff. Had my surgery 8 Feb and now at home recovering.
Any thoughts here on exercise? I’m doing or trying to do 10 minutes a day at the moment.
Also any top tips on diet would be good - I’ve seen the MacMillan leaflet - but for example can I eat smooth peanut butter?
Welcome Grahamthegreat . Have you come across this leaflet ?
Getting some medical input around the type of exercise you can do is helpful as some people report hernias . Particularly if you have stoma you need to get some input .
We have a helpline 0808 808 0000.
But your team will be well aware of where to start and how to grade it appropriately .
Take care ,

Hi Grahamthegreat
I'd suggest you talk to your colorectal nurse team as to what exercise is suitable for you in 1st 6 wks post surgery.
Depending on how your surgery wemt and any complications may mean they have some specific guidance for your case and your ability
These are the ones I did. My hospital gave me exercises pre and post op. I’ve found same online

Hi Grahamthegreat ,
I've had the same procedure as you. Well done to you feeling like you want to exercise! I've only just started to feel like I want to do more than go for short walks.I did however also have to have the rest of my colon removed from my pancreas & other body parts as it had adhered to them.
I was advised that I can introduce what may have been normal exercise after 6-8 weeks, gradually.
I have found this book helpful: The bowel cancer recovery toolkit.
It has exercises to re engage your core & also long term diet advice. I've just started to do the core exercise a few times this week. I'm finding that as the day goes on my abdomen & pelvic muscles feel like they've been on a work out, hence starting to actually to some gentle exercise in the area to see if that helps. It may just be my body letting me know I've been moving about too much. I plan to call the recovery nurses next week if it persists but I'm pretty sure it's just healing pains.
I started to introduce fibre back into my diet very slowly from week 2 of being back home after being on low res for 8 weeks or more. I also kept a food diary, although I have found that foods I introduced & was ok with don't necessarily correlate to the odd 'episode' day I have.
Smooth peanut butter should be fine - I had some that was literally like a runny sauce that was ok as part of the low res. I've been using it up this week actually on newly introduced apple!
All the best,
Bee
