I have recently been diagnosed with rectal cancer and after CT and MRI I saw the surgeon yesterday - the cancer is operable but it seems I need a temporary bag/stoma - this has totally freaked me, the idea of a stoma is very scary and in many ways it's taken over my previous positivity about the process. Cancer is scary enough but I've dealt with the whole process in the most sensible way I can, right up to the point the surgeon mentioned stoma - am I the only person who is so scared of this part of the process?
Hi JessieJ
I know how you feel as I had the same from my surgeon. It was explained to me in detail and although the thought of the stoma was frightening the cancer growing was so much worse.
When I woke up after the operation I knew that cancer was in the bin and I was delighted.
As you can tell by my avatar I named mine Whoopi and I enjoyed life to the full flying abroad, eating out and socialising. My clothes all fitted and people didn’t know
If you click on my name you can read my back story if you wish
I only joined here for advice within the Stoma group. They really are a great bunch with loads of tips
Try to put it to the back of you mind and keep as fit as you can for the operation
Do you know what op you are having ?
There will be people that have been through the same here
sending you a hug
Ann
Hi
I have a permanent stoma. "Eddie" is easily managed, hygienic, and no problem in terms of every day life. A stoma need not define you, need not hinder or be an embarrassment. It sounds like you'll ve a reversal so it seems that the perceived issues will only be short lived. Focus on the positive and you'll be fine. Focus on the fact that the Camcer will be gone and you can get on with life.LIVE IT
All the best
Richard (Eddie Stomart)
A stoma is really nothing to be scared of.thousands of people have one and live happy normal lives.we dress the same,do all the same activities and eat and drink the same(maybe not sweetcorn !!) as everyone else and you would never know who we are unless we told you
As Ann suggested do join the stoma group and also click on our names to read our stories
All the best
Kath
