Newly Diagnosed & Frightened

Hi everyone - yesterday I had a colonoscopy and Gastroscopy where they discovered cancer in my large intestine.

I am absolutely floored - I had no symptoms, I was being investigated for persistent anemia and a positive fecal test suggesting I had an internal bleed. I had no blood when I wiped, no weight loss, nothing.

I am 39 with a 4 year old daughter and I keep going from a positive frame of mind to complete tearful despair.

I can’t bring myself to read the report. One good thing is that I’m  or googling things either.

I have a CT scan on Sunday then it’s a case of waiting for the biopsy results and the team to discuss it but I am sick with worry.

  •    Welcome to the group no one wants to join!! This is the worst time, it will ease when you know a plan. Ask any questions, nothing is too silly, people are here to help, we've all been there! Take care.

    1. Sorry to hear this, wait for biopsy results, there are many good treatments available
  • A big welcome to the forum from me too .

has some good links and I am sure they will share them later but one thing bowel cancer caught early has many good treatment options and good outcomes .
Waiting for the treatment plan can be tough as they are still pulling all the information together but we are here to support you .

    Take care ,

  • Hi NicoleBee and a warm welcome to the board from me too. Yes the waiting for scan results and meetings is very stressful but once you have a plan in place then things will honestly feel a bit better. I’ve attached a link to the booklet that Court mentioned - I was given this at my first meeting and its good at explaining what to expect, some of the terminology etc.

Bowel cancer is notoriously slow growing but very treatable and we’ll be happy to help and support you along the way

    Take care

  • I have the exact same story and feel exactly like you. My scan is Sunday. After being told 2 weeks ago. I feel a little disbelief right now and so unsure as no one has been in touch since making the appointment for the scan 10 days ago. It’s all very scary.

  • Hi NicoleBee, sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It is such an awful shock when it happens. I was like you and had no warning signs until I experienced severe stomach cramps. I just couldn’t believe the diagnosis. Like others have said, it does get easier and less scary when you get a plan for treatment in place. It’s really hard with small children too. Macmillan sent me a booklet about how to talk to children about it - I expect there’s a link on the website somewhere. I can try to find it if you think it would be helpful? X

  • Thank you so much for your kind words everyone, it’s reassuring to hear others experiences!

  • Hi NicoleBee

One day at a time or one step at a time.
    Whatever you can manage

I hope that you can have some distractions with your little one

Once you have the treatment plan you can focus on that

    Take care.

  • Hi Atticus + NicoleBee

Hope both your scans went well today.

It's a bit like a jigsaw puzzle - msy take a bit of time to get the pieces in play, but the picture will soon become clear.

Try and enjoy this time as it can help boost you ready for any treatment you may need
