Hi

thanks for letting me join. I am a 57 year old woman and was diagnosed with bowel cancer on 5th January after reporting symptoms to my doctor in November. I had a colonoscopy in December and knew from that that I had a tumour. I had laparoscopic anterior bowel resection on 24th January. Thankfully I did not have to have a bag. I’m now recovering at home. What I’m struggling with is the absolute exhaustion. I’m normally an active person so not being able to do anything is hard for me. My husband and family have been fantastic but I’m feeling such a burden. Can anyone tell me when I will start feeling a bit more normal. Thank you.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board. I had a LAR and the nurse told me at least 4-6 weeks recovery. I remember how frustrating it was and my husband telling me off for reaching up to pull the roller blind down however doing too much too soon will not benefit you. Try doing small walks and add a little more each day.
Im sure your family won’t be seeing you as a burden - my husband felt that by looking after me he was able to help with my recovery and contribute to my well-being. Cancer tends to revolve round the patient so he felt this was a part he could share and get involved in when he’d felt a bit helpless during all the earlier events.
Baby steps and you’ll get there Thumbsup

    Take care

  • Hi Treacle.

I'm afraid we all respond rather differently and lots of factors play into it - especially how you were immediately after op, how long you were in hospital (inc any complications), how well you body heals and how well you manage diet while repair happens.

But most of us get told to take it very easy for 6wks post op and build up diet and exercise slowly and at the rate your body allows.

Be patient, it will get easier.
