Good morning. I had a colonoscopy yesterday and it showed a 10mm tumour in my rectum. I would be grateful for any information/comments from anyone who has had the same condition and follow up treatment. Many thanks
Hi Feline,
I too had a tumour in my lower rectum, 20mm in size, diagnosed in June 2022. I was told they thought they had caughtitearly and this was indeed the case.
I had CTscan and MRI scan which showed the tumour was confined to my bowel only without spread.
I had a low anterior resection in July with the formation of a temporary stoma. They took 20+ nodes as well as some of bowel lining and I am happy to say the pathology of this was negative for any spread so no chemo or radiotherapy needed afterwards.
I am going back in for stoma reversal on 27th February - a little later than planned as join in bowel took an age to heal.
Wishing you all the best and I'll keep my fingers (and toes) crossed for you.
Take care
Carol
Carol, thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I am so glad that you have had such a good outcome. May I ask you what symptoms you had before being diagnosed? I had a pain in my right side which started last September which I put down to gallstones. Then I noticed changes in bowel movements, traces of blood etc. I have had a CT scan and am now waiting for a date for an MRI. Good luck for the stoma reversal and thank you again for contacting me, Christina
Hi Carol
Theres a great section in the stoma group about regaining bowel movements. I found it really helpful. Also definitely keep those pelvic floor exercises going
I was reversed thirteen months after my LAR I’m doing really well
Hi Christina
I had bloating, extreme difficulty passing stools that I thought I was constipated. Discomfort and wind pain mainly with the bloating I had. Though I did have pain on my right side. I don’t know why.
I was close to blocking
Best wishes
Ann

Hi Christina,
I didn't have any new symptoms before being diagnosed.
Due to previous surgery over 30 years ago on my bowel I have always had problems with diarrhoea, urgency and very occasionally accidents. With hindsight I maybe did have some blood but put it down to haemorrhoids. I had a positive NHS bowel screening test, then colonoscopy with biopsies where the tumour was discovered. MRI & CT scan 2 weeks later and appt with surgeon same day.
I had keyhole surgery too but was a bit more complicated due to my previous surgery but all went well.
The waiting really is the hardest part but once you've had all your results and seen consultant the time will pass quickly and hopefully it is still early stages as they have said. Eat well, exercise, keep your mind occupied and try to rest as well, surgery may take some time to recover from.
Take Care
