I was told I had rectal cancer in May 2022 I received radiology and chemotherapy for 25 days  In August 2022 the idea was to reduce the tumor in size then operate the treatment did it’s job so I could have surgery . But my wife died of the same cancer after having a bag fitted 18 months previously I assisted her with the bag as she struggled with it ,

when they told me my operation would entail a bag I refused mainly due to my age I’m 86 years old and I have numerous ailments including asbestosis so I said no operation my chances of surviving such an operation were no to good any way and I did not want to be a burden to my family at 86 I’ve had a wonderful life the last 40 years were the best a man could wish for so I’m now content with whatever life has lined up for me

  • Hi Willboy

Im so sorry for the loss of your wife. It seems awful that you have the same cancer.
I think the decision not have the operation has come from your experience with your wife and  you seem to have the knowledge of the outcome to make your choice.

I had an Ileostomy and I was actually much better off afterwards as the pressure I had vanished.

I fully understand what you’re saying about you’ve had a wonderful life. I feel pretty much the same. I’m sixty eight and have an appointment with a lung consultant at the end of the month.
I am now reversed and bowel cancer free but I am not sure I’m up for more treatment if it’s spread.
I will consider what’s offered and see where it takes me

    take care.
Hope that you have a good Christmas x
