My partner was diagnosed with colorectal cancer 4 years ago. He’s had 4 surgeries, chemo and radiotherapy and has two stomas now - colostomy and urostomy. He’s coped well with it all over the last 4 years. His 3rd surgery was to treat metastatic cancerous nodule in his lung. They have now found another one and he is being referred for RFA radio frequency ablation. I just wondered if anyone can give more info on having RFA treatment. How it works and how it made them feel?
Hi nicky_noonah
Think we have connected in the past . Delighted to hear your partner is tolerating treatments well .
I will tag in Marianne26 as she has had RFA on her lungs and has great insight .
Take care ,

Hi Nicky
Yes, I had this treatment in Oct '20 - when 2 small lung nodules were picked up on a CT Scan, following treatment for bowel cancer in May '19.
It's a non invasive procedure, that does not require surgery. You can have the option of either sedation or GA. I chose the latter, as you have to keep extremely still - & I didn't trust myself to do so. You are simply laid on a CT scanner, & long needles are directed to the nodules - which are blasted with high radio frequency waves, with the hope of eradicating them.
I woke after GA, with two tiny plasters on the entry points. I went home the following morning, & resumed life as normal. The next day, I had to take my car for its MOT...It's that simple!
As with any medical procedure, there can be associated risks - which he will be warned about. The major one is Lung collapse - which is however very treatable. I had some collection of air within my lungs, but was told this would naturally reduce. I was a little breathless for a few days, but it quickly resolved.
He will have a CT scan a month after. It's not always foolproof - however, if not, this procedure can be repeated many times. My follow up scans since then have all been clear.
Best wishes
Marianne
Hi,
I have 15 lung nodules on both lungs oncology consult phoned me tonight!
Couldn't get any worse. I’m guessing because of the Amount they won’t be able to that procedure.
Cath
Thank you so much for the detail of what to expect and I’m pleased that your future scans have been clear.
Hi Faloola
Is this a new development? Radio frequency Ablation has a criteria and with more multiple nodes they prefer a systemic approach to get stability . But we have had people with multiple nodes who have them resolve with chemotherapy .
Remember you can have a second opinion . My question to mum’s team is not just about disease control but proactive symptom control .
I am thinking of you .

Hi Court,
No the oncologist said they have been there since my first Ct scan end of August. I hade another Ct scan 16th November. I met with him last week and he said I will have another Ct scan end of February where we will discuss treatment. He said it will probably be a pump. He said it will be the same treatment I had 10 years ago. He said that all of my tumours have grown marginally.

Oh that’s just wonderful Faloola . Had to get an urgent appointment with mum’s GP as she did not think it relevant to mention her legs had filled with fluid again .
However her wonderful GP sorted it out quickly and she is now creating a well worn path to the toilet !
She has me running around mad as she likes to thank everyone at this time of year and it’s a big list !
We are sad but trying so hard as that’s what dad would have wanted .
Best foot forward!

She sounds like me regarding the Christmas list. My husband looked in the spare room yesterday and said are you opening a shop ha ha.
It will be sad for you and your mum but your dad sounds like me. I would want people to celebrate together.
