Rectal cancer

I was diagnosed as stage 3 rectal cancer in September 21 I have had chemotherapy/radiotherapy and the operation to remove bowel/rectum and I’m currently having chemotherapy to clear up anything left over. I’m due my 5th session of 8 tomorrow. With the cold weather it’s really worrying with the side effects from it.

  • I would recommend wrapping up well and taking a warm drink with you. Take a scarf to cover your mouth and gloves because even door handles can be cold and generate a ‘shock’. I found that even my thighs felt sensitive when out walking so maybe a long coat too?

  • I do Karen I even have to wear cotton gloves to bed as well as a long sleeve top, it’s just the initial pain in my arm during and after the chemo. When they pull the tape off after it feels like they’re skinning you alive.

  • Oh yes  I totally remember that. It reduced me to tears one day and I couldn’t bear clothes touching my arm for days after. I found a warm wheat bag or hot water bottle helped a bit but I was fitted with a picc line after that which was such a relief. I’ve heard people suggesting in the past that you should ask for it to be put through over a longer period of time but my hospital said this would just prolong the agony although I suspected it might’ve have been more to do with fitting people in to appointment times?

  • hello, I hope the chemo goes well. My cancer sounds similar to yours. I was diagnosed stage 3 (4cm tumour with lymph node involvement) in April 2022. I had a week of radiotherapy, 4 cycles of capos and surgery 3 weeks ago (permanent colostomy). I’m seeing oncologist next week - was told yesterday by phone the lab results show a number of ‘high risk festures’. I’m not sure what further chemo they might suggest? Can I ask what treatment options you were given?

    Many thanks, Moira
