Hello everyone.

My name is Zeke.  I am a biomedical scientist specialising in histology, I am also an anthropologist, a DJ, a keen LARPer and a general ne'er do well :-)

At the age of 44 I was diagnosed with gout.  Routine blood work for the gout found that I was massively anaemic.  This eventually led to a colonoscopy which discovered a 5cm lesion at the ileocaecal junction next to the appendiceal orifice.

Today I spoke to my surgeon and was informed that they intend to perform a right hemicolectomy before the end of the year.

Whilst I am very well informed on the technical and scientific parts of the diagnosis and treatment I am interested to hear from other people who have gone through this surgery and how they found the recovery and return to normal life.

Looking forward to hearing from you all,

Zeke

  • Hi,

I had a right hemi colectomy 10 years ago and recovered great.

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum . Do you find your knowledge of the process helpful in preparing for surgery or is it too much insight ?

My mum actually had a right hemicolectomy back in 2009 .

She had a combined liver resection so it was an open procedure for her which was a bit painful for the first ten days . She does say getting her bowel to waken back up was uncomfortable. However after that initial period she regained control very quickly and slowly introduced foods .
She really can eat most things with no significant issues at all .
We actually took her on holiday six weeks later which included a four hour car journey . Yikes .
    She managed well .

She never really thinks about it now and it’s continued to behave well !

Are you having keyhole surgery ?

  • They also seem to favour enhanced recovery and home quite quickly now .
