Barbie Butt Healing

Hi everyone, I’ve just joined this forum but have found similar discussion threads really valuable during my cancer journey this year. I was diagnosed with stage 3 locally advanced lower rectal cancer in late March. I’ve had radiotherapy and chemo which worked really well to shrink the tumour and then had my APR surgery to remove my rectum and have a colostomy fitted late August. All went pretty smoothly until late September when my perineal wound (aka barbie butt wound) reopened due to bleeding from the cavity in my pelvis and now because I had radiotherapy to the area it’s being incredibly slow to heal. They want it to heal by secondary intention (inside out) so it’s being packed by nurses every day. It’s about the size of a 5p piece and 4cm deep. It’s only healed about 1cm in 6 weeks so looking at a long time at this rate and I still can’t sit properly or drive because of it. I just wondered if others who had radiotherapy and this surgery had experienced this slow healing and how long it took in the end plus any ideas to help speed it up? Thank you!

  • Hi @ML567, sorry to hear circs surrounding your delayed  recovery. You’ve probably looked at my profile so in terms of similarity yes but I was lucky re radio/chemo and managed to avoid that. I hope things improve for you soon and Christmas isn’t to frustrating. I hope this bumps you up to the top again.

  • Hello. I’m in a v similar position. Same diagnosis in April. Had a week of radiotherapy and 4 cycles of capox. Surgery was on 17/11. I was kept in a week and been readmitted twice with a rear end wound infection. I’m not getting it dressed - very as hoc arrangement with Hospital in that I pop in to get it checked every couple of days. They gave us dressings, which we do our best to apply, but it’s not packed. I’m still in a lot of discomfort and can’t get anywhere close to being able to sit down. I’m trying not to take the painkillers they gave me as they make me constipated!
we saw the surgeon yesterday and he didn’t seem too concerned by it. He said if it stops draining or if pain increases, back to hospital.

I totally share your frustration and concern! I’m not sure if more chemo will be suggested yet (confusing meeting with the oncologist), but nothing can happen till the wound is better.

Very best wishes to you. Moira

  • So sorry to hear you’re having such a bad time too there must be others who can support you @Moirq and @ML657. Sitting was always an issue for me but I count myself as very lucky not to have enduredFingers crossedhat you are both going through. Hopefully this will bump you up to the top again. Fingers crossed

  •  Hi@ ML567,

My cancer history is similar to yours,I am an online friend of Ewok. I had the operation, then a month later a second operation as I had an infection.. I had home visits from the district nurses for 2 years but my hole was 10 cm deep. Sorry I have no suggestions to help heal it quicker,it is a long process, but it will heal. I also have the sitting problem and I bought a recliner chair which is better for sitting than my settee. I also use a Feagar coccyx cushion, bought it on Amazon on my chair and in the car. I hope this is of some help.

  • I to had similar treatment ending up with a leaking rear. When I asked my surgeon how ling it would take to heal she told me arounf nine months. I thought she was joking, not no it was just over.

The idea is not to sew you up from the outside where there is a potential for the cavity to get infected but to gradually heal from inside.

i have visits every second day from the district nurses for the nine moths.

it still hurst even though the wound is healed, i presume its due to nerve damage from the surgery.

i also ended up with a permanent stoma bag and hernia but thats another story.

    all the best.
