Hi everyone, I am new to the group. It has taken me all my courage to join and write this.
I was diagnosed with bowel cancer with spread to my liver and lungs. I was left for 5 weeks with no contact of any kind of support or help.
I finally saw my oncologist in August, and he changed everything for me. He advised that he can't cure me, but he can treatment me and this has given me hope.
I started treatment but it didn't agree with me and i ended up in hospital for a week, where is felt like a prisoner as they thought i had an infection. it really was a bad week.
Since then, they have started me on new treatment, i have had no side effects, which i hope is a good sign.
My main problem is my head, i just can't seem to get out of it and the anxiety it is crippling me, I have lost 4 stone in weigh which i could have done with but not due to cancer. I hate looking in the mirror.
My eating is nowhere near what i used to be like, I could use advice on getting my appetite back.
I started seeing a psychologist and that is help, it was him that suggested i contact McMillan.
i hope this is not too long winded, but I just hope it helps me and other.
I look forward to being part of this forum.
Thank you, Lorraine
Hi and a warm welcome to the board. It’s good to hear that the new treatment is agreeing with you better - although maybe not curable there are a lot of people living with cancer and getting on with their lives.
Hopefully the link below will give you a few ideas on regaining some of the weight that you’ve lost. If you don’t have much of an appetite then try and bump up the calories in what you do eat - add butter and full fat milk to mash, have creamy pasta sauces rather than tomato, full fat yoghurts and creamy desserts. There are small nutritional drinks that your doctor can prescribe - they’re about the size of a bottle of actimel but contain 250 calls?
Finally please give the Macmillan support team a ring if you’re struggling - the number and times are at the bottom of this message - they will be happy to listen and help you or just have a chat with them?
Take care

Hi
My mum lost three stones . She used a build up drink as it was easier for her to tolerate and was not too big . You can get them at the supermarket health sections . You might want to think about making sure a dietitian is involved as it can be tricky adding calories in and keeping everything else balanced .
Just now I am having a look into protein drinks but will ask before using them to make sure it is helpful for her .
I am So pleased you joined in the chat . Getting tips on how to live a good life in spite of a difficult diagnosis really helps . My mum is 13 years into a stage 4 diagnosis with a recurrence. I get the feeling the hospital staff think she might not have fully absorbed it . But it’s her third recurrence and I think she is focused on making sure she keeps her life as the priority with treatment fitting in around it .
However it took time to learn to accept it all and find a way forward .
Take care ,
