Hello, I have just joined. I was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in June, 5 days before my 70th birthday. It was such a shock as I really did not have any of the classic symptoms. I had surgery in August, which I am told went as planned, and am about to start chemotherapy next week.

It has been a complete emotional rollercoaster. I am feeling very apprehensive about chemo, especially the side effects, but am trying to stay positive. I just feel my life is on hold for now. My husband and family are very supportive, for which I am so grateful.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and am happy to share my experience if it can help someone.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board. Yes I remember feeling exactly the same but people have different reactions to chemo which is why it’s worth keeping a diary - you may find that you feel a bit rough for the first couple of days but pick-up on your week off so can plan nice things for then? Are you having Capox ie. Iv oxaliplatin followed by capecitabine tablets? I’ve attached a link to a post that we started about chemo that you might want to take a look at?

Chemo can have a lot of side effects but there are lots of pills and potions to help combat them and sometimes a dose reduction or change of anti sickness med can make a huge difference. Talk to the nurses about any side effects and sometimes the thought of chemo can be worse than the actual bite.

Glad you’ve joined us - we’re always glad to hear of recent experiences

    Take care

  • Hi Kareno62, thank you so much for your supportive post. Yes, I am to have Capox. I have my pre-assessment on Wednesday, so I have a chance to ask questions. I think you're right that actually the thought of chemotherapy can be worse than the treatment itself. I'm maybe worrying too much about the side effects.

  • Thank you so much for the link, those tips are really helpful. xxx
