Too old for chemotherapy?

I had my bowel cancer op when I was 79 last November. The oncologist said if I were 10 years younger she would recommend chemo-, but due to my age, she didn't recommend it, and it might even kill me.

So I didn't have any chemo.

Now 11 months later it seems the cancer is spreading as shown by high CEA readings in my blood tests. So I decided to avoid chemo a second time. I'm now 80 and have had a good life (apart from early widowhood) but I am ready for it to end. So many of my friends are veering towards dementia or are having strokes. I don't look forward to an extended old age.

Are there others out there who have declined chemotherapy?

  • Hi Boukey

It sounds as though you have come to your decision after thought and experience.
I wasn’t offered chemo but my sister in law was. She had lung cancer had an op  and went for chemo after the oncologist told her that it was the same chemo her late husband had and that it would have an affect on her bone density. As she’s suffering from osteoporosis and she nursed her husband with the chemo and said it was very aggressive.

After considering all pros and cons she said No

    She hasn’t regretted it.

It’s about patient centred and what’s right for the individual.

I’m not sure I’m up for more treatment, I was clear things were good now there’s a question mark on my lung and I will weigh up what’s best for me depending what’s suggested in a couple of months if needed I will consider what treatment is offered against what outcome is

Thanks for sharing this with us

     Take care.

  • Hi, , I was offered and took chemo, but I am younger. Time gained is not the be all and end all. Quality is the key in my book. It does sound as if you have very nearly decided to go with quality and not duration, and I fully understand your thoughts. All the very best, ((hugs))
