Hi, I am a 44 year old female. I had been suffering with abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea & more recently vomiting for the last 5 months.
Didn’t get very far with the GP, as they said I had stomach flu, gastritis or ibs every time I contacted them. I ended up in A&E 3 times, where they said the same as the GP.
Then I paid for a private consultation which led to a CT scan and a colonoscopy. These showed that I had a 30cm stricture which was possibly inflammation. They took biopsies and I was awaiting results. 5 days later I began faecal vomiting so went to A&E for the 4th time. I had a bowel blockage so had a right hemicolectomy.
I am now home from hospital recovering from surgery and have been told the histology results confirm cancer. They took 24 nodes to sample and 2 had cancer so I am going to start chemotherapy within the next couple of weeks. I’m feeling pretty nervous. I have a 2 year old so I’m desperate for the treatment to work. I’ve been told it hasn’t spread to my liver and I’m getting booked in for a CT scan of my chest.
Good evening Opal flower, what a lot you’ve gone through already.
It’s understandable that you’re feeling nervous about the treatment. I felt the same at the beginning of the week when I started my Chemoradiotherapy.
I’d suggest you take each day at a time and try not to get bogged down with the possible side effects or “What if’s”
There are some amazing people, Treatments and resources out there. Sorry, about your experiences so far but hope there’ll be a turn around for you.
I can understand your desperation especially as you have a 2 year old. What a lovely age...
Good to hear you’re booked in for a CT scan.
Hope you are able to do some activities, even reading a book or listening to some upbeat music with your child may help or be a distraction from what’s going on. 2 year olds can teach us a lot about living in the moment!
Take care of yourself
Welcome to the forum Opalflower but I really do feel for you as that is one difficult way to get diagnosed. What a time you have had .
I have linked in a thread that forum members have put together that gives some tips for going through chemotherapy from their experiences.
You have come through so much and we are here to help and support you through this part .
Bowel cancer has lots of different approaches but it is very treatable and lots of people are safely through the other side of treatments but stay to support others .
Take care ,

Thank you for the links, I will definitely take a look.
it’s also good to know so many people have great success stories of recovery it’s very encouraging, thank you xxx
Hello, sorry for all the troubles you have been through before getting a diagnosis. The good news I hope is that it has now been found, removed and chemo will get to work quickly on the nodes. I was diagnosed in April, had week of radiotherapy and now on 4th cycle of chemo, surgery to follow in a few weeks time. The last 2 cycles of chemo have been a challenge, but I know many have no / few side effects.
wishing you all the best. There are a lot of amazing people on here that I am sure will help with good advice and support xx
Hi Opalflower,
Thanks for your reply.
I wonder if you’re feeling any different now your treatment is closer.
So pleased your daughter brings a smile to your face. My niece brought tears of happiness to me on Tuesday when she passed her driving test. I was so pleased and proud of her.
Now completed 9 out of 25 Chemoradiotherapy sessions. I had my first review yesterday, bit of a mixed bag of feelings. Overcome with the kindness I’ve been shown, still in shock I think about diagnosis and treatment plan and wishing sometimes information about what could happen was not shared. I know they do it to help you prepare and with the best intentions but sometimes I don’t want to know. I suppose I’m putting my head in the sand!
A bit of good news or positivity around the treatment would be lovely to hear. Really impressed by the images I saw on screen and the explanations. It’s all so clever.
Each day is different, the last 2 days I’ve got the right amount In my bladder so that’s been good, makes the whole process a lot quicker.
Hope you’re making the most of each day,
sending you a big hug
