Hi, I'm new to the group. My husband was diagnosed with colo/rectal cancer 6 years ago. He had lots removed and ended up with a permanent stoma, since has developed a huge hernia, but I digress ... they discovered he had secondaries in his lungs, apparently very small nodules, and he completed 6 months of folfox 2 months ago, been back for review and bloods yesterday,  not looking good, another scan on 2nd with a view to going back on chemo. We're in an odd situation, we live in France, and when we found out about the secondaries, we both said, we need to go home. Our house is sold, completion the 9th Sept, and we have arranged a holiday rental in Lincolnshire from the 17th while we house hunt. We did not expect things to go pear-shaped so soon after the 6 months of chemo. Does anyone have any advise for continuation of oncology care on our return? I have emailed the Macmillan helpline and am waiting a reply. Thank you for reading, am at my wits end

  • Hi

What a tough time you are having .

If you click on my user name you can read how my mum’s team navigated a stage 4 diagnosis. Can I ask if it’s his tumour markers that have gone up in his blood ?
Some people manage better with maintenance chemo at a more tolerable dose but over a longer period of time . If he has not had his scan yet it could possibly be that his CEA is rising but not necessarily had much growth .

We found the oncologist very good in the U.K. . There was a lot of bumps along the way till they got a bit of stability . Tough times for sure and a lot for the person going through treatment but the team were always in the background working away and keeping an eye on things .

My mum had tumour regrowth in her liver within the first three months . They waited a further three months and rescanned  then restarted chemotherapy. It was so disappointing but chemotherapy did achieve something for her . You will see people on the boards , particularly over on bowel cancer U.K. using maintenance chemotherapy. It works for some people .

But there is a lot of uncertainty and support required .

Not sure about the area you are moving to but we found them very efficient and worked hard for her .

A lot for you to process with the house moves too but we are here to listen and help you both navigate his diagnosis.

    Take care ,

  • Thank you so much, really appreciate your kind words. Yes it was the markers in his bloods. He's on a 'stop and go' chemo regime. We had hoped the stability would have lasted longer, with the move so imminent it puts us in a very difficult situation. Just hoping I can arrange the transition smoothly and as quickly as possible.

  • Hi Court, I replied to you, but can't see my response! Perhaps I clicked the wrong button! As I said new to this ...

  • Hi ,

Sometimes you can accidentally hit the report button and it disappears for a few minutes , admin check it and pop it back on . Happens to me all the time but it seems to be there now .

Hopefully Macmillan can give you some support in getting the referral to the oncology department right away and getting GP services registered . A lot of GP services has gone onto telephone calls but the oncologist are very much in person for a lot of the care .
They will take good care of him. Even if he can restart it in France they will hopefully be able to keep the consistency going .

My mum’s oncologist always insisted the scans are much more reliable than the markers so hoping it’s a bit better than suggested .

Let me know if your struggling to get through to Macmillan and I will ask admin for some guidance .

    Take care ,
