A month ago I had a CT scan which reported I had thickening in the hepatic flexure part of colon and was suspicious of a tumour. I was referred for a colonoscopy, which I had 2 days ago. Today I met with consultant who advised colonoscopy came back normal. I was relieved to hear this, but concerned about what the CT scan was still saying. The consultant didn’t seem interested in the CT results, only that the colonoscopy was normal. I feel so worried that the consultant is quick to dismiss the CT scan and has offered no rationale for the thickening. I’m feeling like just because the colonoscopy was normal the CT results are being ignored. I have had a discomfort for 11 months in my hepatic region and feel like it’s too much of a coincidence that the thickening/ tumour showed up in this area, for it to not be taken seriously. Really worried that perhaps the thickening/ tumour could be on the outside of the colon and that’s why it didn’t show on the colonoscopy, surely a CT scan wouldn’t show this if there was nothing. Appreciate any thoughts folks, worried sick!!
Hi.
I can understand you worrying.
My mind was all over the place.
Can you phone your nurse who should have all the results to reassure you as to why there’s no cause for concern as far as your consultant thinks. This may make you feel more informed as to why you’ve been told there’s nothing in the CT
Ask for your blood results as well
Hope you have some more in depth answers.
Ann
Hi Dais pop
Have you had a CEA reading ? It’s a simple blood test . CEA is a tumour marker for bowel cancer and although not reliable for everyone it can rise if bowel cancer is present . You can get them from your GP or private places do them . It would give you another angle to investigate.
Its not used as a screen for bowel cancer as it’s not reliable enough for that but oncologist still use them .
The colonoscopy is always the more investigative tool for checking out the bowel after a Ct scan . It’s right inside the colon compared to an external image which might not be accurate . However I guess In all fairness not all Colonoscopies will be 100 % accurate . They were actually withdrawing from my mum’s colonoscopy when the junior dr noticed a very small fold that contained a banded tumour .
However I think they would have paid close attention to the area of concern .
We have an “ask an expert “ section if that would be of use to you .
You can also get a second opinion . You have questions that have not been fully answered .
Take care ,

Hi Court
Thank you for responding and your advice it’s always useful. I had the CEA blood test and it was 2.1. I can’t help but still worry as to why I have the discomfort and why my (toilet waste) is loose and not solid. I suppose I’m concerned about is the thickening on the outside of colon, the consultant only seemed to address the colonoscopy scan and wasn’t even going to mention the CT results. Who do I go back to for a second opinion? Thanks
Hi Artsie
Thanks for your reply. I haven’t been given a nurse. Seen the consultant yesterday who I felt was trying to wrap it all up without even addressing the CT scan and didn’t seem interested in explaining much. I did ask what my blood CEA came back as, and it was 2.1. Just so worried as to why one scan indicates something but another apparently shows nothing and could the tumour be on the outside of the colon?
Thanks
Hi Dais pop
Im sorry I’m not medically trained but the nurses here are really helpful and give great advice and support. I’m sure they can point you in the right direction to get some answers. Please stay away from Google. I terrified myself on that early days and what I looked up wasn’t what I had.
Ann
Your GP can arrange it for you .
The other way to eliminate any doubt is a PET scan . It would show uptake on the outside of the colon if it was malignant .
It’s so hard as they may not be concerned and see this thousands of times and we only have limited information but I do see why you want a conversation round that .
They don’t do PET scans routinely so not sure how they would work but our helpline staff could advise you also on 0808 808 0000

Hi, Dais pop, I understand your concern. One of my CT scans showed a thickening /lump near my caecum which doesn't show on a colonoscopy as it is within the wall. They are not worried as it is probably a fatty lipoma , they will check on the next CT . Check with your nurse, but maybe this will help ease your mind. ((Hugs))
