Hello
I am a 44 year old woman who went for routine blood tests in May to discover I was anaemic. After some more investigation as to why, I did a stool sample and it came back with blood present. I went for a colonoscopy to discover a 5cm malignant growth in my caecum. A HUGE shock as zero symptoms nothing, not even for the anaemia. The next few weeks were awful, CT scans to see if it had spread, biopsy results and then a meeting with my consultant about options. CT scan came back clear so no other spread, and at the appointment was given two options of treatment as my growth is showing genetic abnormalities, I could have immunotherapy or surgery. I opted for surgery and it was 6 days ago. All went well and the key hole procedure was a success. I am at home recovering and will go back to the hospital for the histology report to discuss if I need chemo. The pain I’m experiencing now is like a stabbing pain in my right hand side. Which I can only imagine is normal as this was where the colon was cut and put together again. I am keen to know what other people have been like post surgery? I know I have a long journey ahead of me with treatment and genetic testing but for now all I can process is healing.
Hi Also Known Asand welcome to the board. Good to hear that you’re safely through the op. It sounds like you’ve had a whirlwind couple of months but hopefully you can catch your breath for a few weeks and focus on your recovery
There are lots of aches and pains afterwards so take the pain relief that they’ve given you. Your insides will be settling back down and starting to repair and the stabbing pain is probably the sensation returning to your nerves?
Listen to your body - take your short walks if you can but rest if you need to - it generally takes about 5 weeks to recover so be kind to yourself and ring your colorectal support nurse if you’re worried. I found I often got a full ache at the bottom of my back and my nurse told me to alternate my days walking with a rest day and build up slowly
Take care
