Hi,
Currently started my pre-op preparation for surgery tomorrow. How did everyone else cope with all the fluid. Got to take 2x plenvu to clear bowel,3x pre load CHO drink as well as fluids in between.
Surgery planned for 9am tomorrow. T2 tumour in upper part of rectum. Surgeon hopes to do keyhole despite my extensive previous upper bowel surgery 35+ years ago but if not able I will need laparotomy. Its 50/50 whether I will have a temporary illeostomy, may even be permanent. Been told due to other heath issues I may need to go to HDU afterwards. It really didn't phase me at all. I have been really strong and coped well with diagnosis and all the follow up tests and waiting for plan. Now though, to say I'm terrified is an understatement. I think the enormity of it all has just hit me. Any tips for keeping it together tonight and trying to get a few hours sleep greatly appreciated
Many thanks
Carol
Hi Caza. I’ve not had Plenvu but when I’ve had to large quantities of moviprep before a colonoscopy I measured the first dosage out into a jug then worked out how much I needed to drink every quarter of an hour for example. Then I put that amount into a glass, took 3 big slurps through a wide straw followed by a swig of tonic water with lemon to take the taste away!
The tricky bit is trying to distract yourself - a good film, ring a friend, tricky crossword? I tend to read in bed when I cant sleep then quickly turn the light out when my eyes start to droop. Focus on the final result - by this time tomorrow the tumour will be gone and you’ll be on the road to recovery.
Hope it all goes well
Take care

Hi Carol
I wanted to wish you well in the prep for your operation.
My preparation for for my operation was much more bearable than for the colonoscopy. It wasn’t as aggressive I was told that the prep is more about giving your body proteins to repair rather than emptying it. I had some bowel prep which was okay. Isotonic powder to hydrate Two protein drinks before bed and two in the morning. I actually liked them though I was concerned that I may be putting stuff in when I’d just taken it out.
I double checked I was prepared with my bag, watched a romcom and played word games or similar on my phone. I was up at five thirty anyway and thought I’m not worried about sleeping as I’d be catching up in hospital
I put it out of my mind and handed myself over for the experts to get rid of that horrid thing in me. I felt that whatever the outcome Stoma permanent or not I was in the position of fighting now and it wasn’t going to win.
The pure relief waking up was joy knowing it was out
Look forward to that.
I really hope all goes well. Please keep us updated
Good Luck
Ann
Hi Karen& Artsie Ann,
Thank you both for you kind words. I've managed to drink all my Plenvu and pre load so far with not too many visits to the loo (so far lol).
Thanks too for your tips to keep myself occupied. I've packed & repacked my bag, watched some documentaries & films today. Left hubby to make dinner as I wasn't allowed to eat it so wasn't cooking it. Got a book now to read so
I'll get a little sleep
I'll keep you posted on the outcome
