Hi have been diagnosed with Bowel Cancer, I was expecting to be told what stage the Cancer is at and given a full treatment plan this week, However at a consultation on Wednesday they have not staged the Cancer due to an anomaly that can't be explained that is present in my body, As a result i am going in for surgery on Friday next week (29th) to have the cancer, nearby lymph nodes and a section of my colon removed, they will also take out the anomaly that is in me.
the CT scan used for staging looked fine and didn't indicate it had spread anywhere, its just this anomaly (a 1.7cm mass) in an area that should not have anything there that is preventing this, its presence there has baffled everyone.
The staging will be confirmed when the removed parts have been to a pathologist so we can find out what this anomaly is.
To say I'm scared is an understatement especially when the consultant told me I would be having surgery next week.
Hi Andysel and welcome to the board. I can imagine you’re feeling pretty shellshocked by all this and with the added extra of the anomaly thrown in. A lot of people go straight to surgery and the staging given before surgery is only a preliminary one. The report from the path lab will confirm the final staging and whether you will need any follow up chemo. My friend was actually downstaged from her initial staging from 3 to 2 when they found there were no lymph nodes affected.
Ive attached a link to a booklet about the op and there’s a page of handy things to take with you - extra long charging cable for your phone is a good one.

The surgeons do these sort of ops on a daily basis so put your trust in their skills and focus on getting the tumour and anomaly removed.
Please let us know how you get on
Take care

Sorry to hear that ,I didn't get my coon cancer graded till after the surgery, they removed the cancer my colon and 20 lymp nodes to test I was stage 3 due to 5 out of 20 lymp nodes with cancer activity
I'm now 8 weeks post op having chemo and feel a lot better than before the surgery
Keep talking and asking questions and good luck with your surgery,,sending best wishes
Hi Andysel
It is really frightening to think about staging and spread however now you have a date that means the cancer is out of you.
That’s a huge relief. I was positively joyous when I came around from my op
I wasn’t told the stage until two weeks after my op when they had the results. So I think that’s how it works. They need to be absolutely sure of the stage to discuss further treatment if any
Good luck
Ann
